I've always cried in certain movies. I cried when little Bobby
Driscoll got gored by the bull in "Song of the South". I mourned
when I learned that Disney had pulled the film from the market because of
the depiction of Negroes. (As if Uncle Remus was anything but the
most lovable character.) That act by Disney is as ridiculous as censoring
"Huckleberry Finn" or "To Kill a Mockingbird" because they contain the
word, 'Nigger'.
I always cry during the scene in "The Sound of Music" in which the
Captain comes to value the genius-like spirit of his children's nanny,
Maria.
There are scenes in "Schindler's List" that produce in me a
cataract of tears.
But the most heart-wrenching moments I remember from my childhood
weren't even from a movie per-se, but from the March of Dimes? ad where
Howard Keel sings "You'll Never Walk Alone" from "Carrousel" as the
crippled child in his braces staggers toward him. When the
house-lights came up I always did my best to help fill the
donation canister as it was passed around.
YOU'LL NEVER WALK ALONE
|
When you walk through a storm,
Hold your head up high,
And don't be afraid of the dark.
At the end of a storm,
There's a golden sky,
And the sweet silver song of a lark.
Walk on through the wind,
Walk on through the rain,
Though your dreams be tossed and blown..
Walk on, walk on, with hope in your heart,
And you'll never walk alone...
Walk on, walk on, with hope in your heart,
And you'll never walk alone...
You'll never walk alone.

Now, I am more aware of the multitude of things I have to be grateful
for, and of course the fact that I now have more to give to worthy causes.
These days, I tend to dedicate myself to the causes of Freedom.
Of course, Freedom isn't everything - it's just one of the Main
things. Below you will find some of my favorite causes. I say
'some', because I can never finish this page, and because inexplicably,
some of my favorites just don't seem to have a web-site yet.
Peruse, and enjoy the joy of giving!
