" Tumi " - Ceremonial Knife -
The naked prisoner of war stands tied to a tree, his arms bent around its trunk, his mouth open in a cry of pain. His face has been peeled away, leaving no lips to cover his teeth and only cartilage where his nose had been. He strains to avoid a vulture that is pecking out his right eye. Opening his breast with a TUMI and seizing the still beating heart by the diviner, will be the last thing before his head being cut off with the same pure gold knife, in order to please the Sun God. This event ocurred about 1500 years ago, during the Splendor of the Moche, a Pre-Inca civilization.
Shining with the sunlight a gold human head, broadfaced like an infant's, returns everybody stare with haunting and heavy - lidded eyes of silver and cobalt pupils of lapis lazuli . Gold human heads almost 3 inches high, that were once linked to form an invaluable gorgeous necklace for the tomb's royal occupant, reveal a remarkable Masterworks of Art of the amazing Moches.

" The Decapitator , " a gold grim deity holds a knife called tumi in its left hand and a profiled human head in its right, a common theme in Moche art. Found inthe royal coffin, the figure adorns a gold bell, its sound created by small copper balls inserted in the hollow spheres bordering the piece.
" The Ulluchu Man ". The size of a crab deity astound everybody. With the head and legs of a human and the caparace, legs, and claws of a crab, the gilded gold piece is more than two feet tall. This enigmatic figure with raised arms was once mounted on a fabric banner covered with gilded metal plates. We call him Ulluchu Man, because the banner yielded some of the first samples of this ancient fruit yet discovered. The ulluchu is laden with symbolism, usually appearing in scenes relating to war and the ritual drinking of a prisoner's blood. One Theory suggests that the ulluchu is part of the papaya family and has anticoagulant properties, useful to forestall clotting before a man's blood was consumed. That such bloody business would go hand in hand with masterpieces in metal and clay remains a piece of the puzzle of the mysterious Moche.
