The debate over drug policy has been skewed by a lot of disinformation by government and private taxpayer funded [via tax deductible contributions] organizations whose preponderance of air time has dominated the political landscape - to the detriment of parents who have the twin concerns of protecting their families against crime and their children against exposure to dangerous drugs - which do include presently legal drugs like alcohol and tobacco. One of the more notorious - and well funded - organizations that claims to be against kids using drugs [although Ive yet to hear one ad on the air even mentioning legal drugs] is the Partnership for [an illegal Drug Free America. Up until recently they received a lot of money from companies who sold alcohol and tobacco; they may still be receiving it indirectly, since many of the companies who give heavily are foundations who may not be as embarrassed as the PDFA.
A comprehensive list of major contributors to the Partnership for [an illegal] Drug Free America
Critics of a sensible drug policy which includes decriminalization and sale of presently illegal drugs in a regulated manner have presented the public with the false choice of reducing crime [that point is conceded without debate; we do have a history] - at the expense of opening up the floodgates for [illegal] drug use [by children - isnt stated but implied].
The fact is that any drug that will be legalized will be less available for purchase by children. Those drugs will be significantly easier - and safer - to purchase for adults. And although legalization will present adults more options for safer delivery, there will always be stereotypical druggies looking for intense highs who will abuse them - much like the stereotypical good ole boyz and girlz who get into riots after drinking themselves into a drunken rage. I know; Ive met both stereotypes and they do exist - although they are far outnumbered by those who use drugs in moderation and in the safest manner available. In any event , these abusers wont be committing crimes to get money for their habits and they still arrest users of legal substances when they get out of hand.
The bottom line is that the best proven remedy for reducing drug use - and abuse - is via public education. You cant publicly educate with any credibility when 90% of your resources are being spent on less than 5% of the drug problem. Prescription drugs are responsible for over 80% of the drug deaths and I see very little public education on the prescription drug dependency problem. Alcohol and tobacco companies - spurred on by a lot of bad press [which doesnt seem to effect illegal drug dealers whatsoever] spend a lot of their own money warning the public about the potential for abusing their product. The PDFAs apparent motto is : if its legal, it cant be THAT bad.
In any event, parents should get information on all drugs that your children can abuse; my two deceased brothers died from prescription drugs and alcohol respectively at ages 10 and 39. There is a great site that appeals to younger users that gives out a lot of useful information about all kinds of problem drugs.
A good site for parents and children to learn about drugs - together
They have a drug quiz that will illuminate parents and children alike about drugs and their potential for abuse. I scored less than half on the test, knowing very little about the newest street drugs and next to nothing about abuseable prescription drugs. As a parent, be prepared: drug abuse education is a 2 way street; well informed children may - and should [if they love you] - warn you about your problem drug habits as well as vice versa. If you refuse to listen to them about your drug abuse problem, how can you expect them to listen to you. Although drug use - especially by adults with more developed immune systems - isnt necessarily abuse, most children are already smart enough to tell the difference; they just need at least one logical reason that makes sense to them for why they should delay their use of all recreational drugs until later. Drug war propaganda simply hasnt worked and could even backfire when [not if] your child discovers major deceptions. Your child knows a lot more than the government thinks and it is bad parental policy to insult his/her intelligence in the same manner that viable candidates routinely insult yours.
