The corporate line is that people in 3rd world countries eagerly support their version of capitalism with its long hours, low pay, hazardous working conditions and poisonous air in their local communities. Well crazy as it sounds this is mostly true and I will explain why people overseas, and immigrants here embrace the "opportunities" offered by our investors.

In any oppressive system, there has to be some upward mobility in order to keep the lower classes in line. The ruling elite has to get the support or at least acquiescence of the oppressed citizenry to maintain legitimacy. Otherwise the system will topple from below, initially manifesting itself in lack of respect for the laws and an underground economy. The main reason most people put up and even support an oppressive society is not that there is likelihood for reform that will transform the entire society, but that there is always the chance that one might advance to the ruling class and enjoy that lifestyle. Sort of like winning the lottery. There must be some people who start from humble beginnings and rise to the upper echelon. In autocratic societies the process is one of attrition and require 3 qualities to advance. The three qualities you need are - in particular order:

1) Talent and ability

2) Good attitude

3) Willingness to work hard and apply oneself.

Firstly, you need to have a minimal level of talent or ability or the whole process lacks credibility. Secondly, you will need to have the right attitude. That means that you have to demonstrate wholehearted support for the system with all its harshness, inequities, and inefficiencies. The road to success is one of attrition and those who "through their own efforts rise to the top" must not be inclined to reform the system. Any reformist tendencies or questioning of either morality or efficiency demonstrates a severe attitude problem. Thirdly, one must be willing to sacrifice values for ones ambitions. These values often include family, friends, and the community in which one grew up. The payoff is getting all the perks that only a select few can afford to get, especially since the social system is working so inefficiently that little is afforded the society as a whole. The only hope for betterment for such a social system as a whole is some form of conquest or economic imperialism which subjugates another social system in like manner.

The system with all its faults is self perpetuating; very often those who rise to the top not only forget their roots, but are even harsher, more unfair, and more inefficient than those who were born into the ruling class. In fact the only avenue of reform - short of revolution [which is usually violent] is from the top. Someone with all the perks either develops a conscience - or sees the inefficiencies and limitations it offers. In a competition for real power, such a system can and will be overwhelmed by one which empowers. That is because the ruling elite are never the intellectual, creative, and productive best that the society can offer - those who can think too well are too dangerous to be given a forum for their ideas.

Of course, this type of society is strictly 3rd world.... right?
