Badung is one the nine regencies in the island of Bali.
This Kriss-like shape area is located middle-south of Bali stretches northward.
It consists of 4 districts which is then devide into : 7 subdistricts (Kecamatan),
33 Administrative villages (Desa Dinas), 297 smaller administrative villages (Dusun)
and 119 neighbourhoods. There are also 118 traditional villages (Desa Adat) and 498
smaller traditional villages known as "Banjar" with 498 Youth organizations. The
area covers about 418,52 square kilometers (7,43 % of the total area of the island.
The population is 295,282 people (based on The Electors Enrolment Committee for '97
General Election), So that the density is 705 people per square kilometers.
The south part of the area are tourists resorts with beautiful white sand beaches with
warm weather, in the north is the mountain range, while in the middle are farms.
In the 6th Five-year Development (Pelita VI) are emphasized on several sectors such as
on cultured tourism, agriculture, small industries and crafts.
The development area of Badung is devided into three areas :
North Badung includes districts of Petang and Abiansemal for the activities of
agrculture and horticulture directed to exported commodities and to support tourism,
natural potensies for tourist-objects, water and land conservation and small industries
and crafts. Central Badung includes The district of Mengwi with the activities of food
agriculture, tourism and physical development for City Plan. South Badung includes the
district of Kuta with its activities in tourism, trade and education center.
During the 6th Five-year Development (94-98), The Regency of Badung has reached the higest
increase in economy, 8,3 % average in a year.
Seen from the income per capita, The People welfare Ratio is cheerful. In 1991, when the
Denpasar Municipility was not yet seperated from Badung, the real income per capita was
Rp. 1.984.349. When Denpasar got the autonomy in 1992, the income per capita increased to Rp.
2.872.054,14. This happens continuously then and in 1995 the income per capita was
Rp. 5.326.000.
From sectoral role, the economy of Badung has been forwarding into advanced economy, where the
primary sector role (agriculture and diggings) changed into secondary and tersiery.
Transportation and communication sectors gave higest contribution (25,98%), followed by trade,
Hotel and Restaurants (45,94%) and agriculture sector which contributed only 7 % in 1994.
The realization of the Local Real Income increase continuously from year to year until 1995/1996
and the income was Rp.69,96 billions, while in 96/97 will be targeted into Rp. 67,77 billions
(before the change).
The success of the development in Badung is due to the peoples active-participation. This
participation can be seen from the people innate-efforts especially in these last five years.
The innate efforts was to finance: 416 kilometers of rural reads. 337 community halls and self
education of Pancasila (State Phylosophy) for 10.449 people, as well as for other social activities.
In 1994, there were 4242 under-welfare families and fortunately this could be absolutely solved in
1995. Even in 1996 The Regency of Badung has been stated as free from under-welfare families.
The Local Government of Badung also put priority on Education. Widya Krama award was received from
the central Government to prove the succes in 9 years Basic Education Program. The Netto Enrolment
Ration of people aging 7 to 12 yaers in 1996 (until June) was 99,76% while from 7 to 15 was 96,62 %.
The Regency of Badung has gor awards either from Local Government of Bali, Nationally and Internationally
such as Universal Child Immunisation award, Satya Lencana 1991, Satya Lencana award on Development,
Pertasi Kencana award (on agriculture, cooperative and Family Planning), The Best Regency on Population
enrolment 1992, Adipura Certificate (on clean and healthy city) 1993, Manggala Karya Kencana 1993,
Aksara Nugraha award 1993 (in solving illiterate), Out School Education Development award 1993, Adipura
Trophy (94/95), Widya Krama 1995, Satya Lencana Wira Karya 1995, Abdi Satya Bhakti award 1995 (on Public
service for building permit), Tata Loka Nagaratama 1996, Third rank on dicipline for Public Transport
Driver 1996, Abdi Satya Bhakti 1996 (on Public service in building permit) and Abdi Satya Bhakti 1996
(Public service on cooperative).
