Taylor Branch is a historian who brings history to life in all its glory and agony. His latest book, Pillar of Fire: America in the King Years 1963-1965, shows the civil rights movement in an elegant detail permeated with truth and understanding. This is the highest caliber of US social history. It captures a time when people felt compelled to take action regardless of risk.
