Jeff Merkley is the Democratic Speaker of the Oregon House of Representatives and is campaigning to replace Oregon's Republican U.S. Senator Gordon Smith. Merkley wants young people to have greater opportunities. He wants to smartly reduce the creation and use of meth so that we can have safer and more decent communities in Oregon and elsewhere. He will increase support for crime victims and work to reduce those conditions that create crime. He worked to increase educational opportunities in Oregon and as a US Senator he would work to increase education opportunities nationwide by fully funding national education measures for public schools so that No Child Left Behind can become real instead of its present numerous failures. Head Start programs should also be fully funded. He would work to make college education more affordable. He would work to make health care available to every child. He has a five-point plan to stabilize Iraq and end the American occupation phase of the Iraq war. He has a four-part plan to combat global warming and would fight to get his plan implimented. He was the chief sponsor in the Oregon House on lowering payday loan interest and hopes to be able to do the same nationally. He hopes to bring the same zeal to reforming credit card companies, mortgage lenders, sub-prime lending and other gross scams that are ruining many American families.
