FUTURESAVER OF THE WEEK ENDING 5-3-2008

Better

Mairead Corrigan and Betty Williams won the 1976 Nobel Peace Prize for founding the Northern Ireland Peace Movement and working to create peace from mindless and reckless terror-based warfare. They acted to empower the people themselves to end senseless violence. They marched for peace not war, reconciliation not terror. Northern Ireland terror, like most terror was based on historical injustice that remains unremedied because one group insists on continuing to be dominant over another and the other insists on being democratically equal and free from dominion. Ordinary men and women have sense enough to know that violence by itself cannot create reasonable democratic reform which must come from negotiation and fairness between reasonable opponents. War does not solve problems; peaceful negotions between democratic opponents solve problems. Reconciliation and mutual cooperation solves problems. War results from undemocratic dominion on one or more sides that is immune to democratic reform. Warmongers are those who assault those peacefully demonstrating against injustice and who create lies to justify the unjustifiable. Peaceful people in Northern Ireland removed barbed wire barriers, tore down barricades and spoke loudly for peace. When the goal is peace every effort must be made to remove the obsticals that block democratic and peaceful reforms. For working energetically to create peace in Northern Ireland/elsewhere, Mairead Corrigan and Betty Williams have been named Futuresavers of the Week. Click the links below for more information.
