FUTURESAVER OF THE WEEK ENDING 4-19-2008

Better

Sister Ann Fox strongly believes in quality education so she cofounded the Paraclete Center in South Boston which is an enrichment center for South Boston youth. With Aloisea Inyumba they created a free Rwandan middle school for girls. Sister Ann previously was executive director of South Boston Neighborhood House and also worked in children's programs in urban areas of Baltimore and New York City. The Rwanda school opened in March 2008. It is a beautiful oval-shaped campus with 9 orange-brick buildings housing computer and science labs, a dorm, dining room and classrooms. The students were chosen for high scores on national exams. The government of Rwanda now has the highest percentage of female representatives in the world. The school principal is a nun from the Benebikira Sisters but the school is secular. During the genocide most of the teachers were killed and the schools demolished so they desperately need a surge in education. The school has a solar energy component. Sister Ann also participated in Women Waging Peace which was created to develop an international network of women peacemakers from conflict areas around the world and bring them to Cambridge to support one another. Sister Ann is now thinking about building a high school. For helping to build a better future for our children, Sister Ann Fox has been named Futuresaver of the Week.
