Ethnicity is a part of our genetic and social backgrounds that we can rightfully appreciate and be fond of. But it is not something that we should be so rigidly attached to that we look down on, hate or otherwise disparage those whose ethnic background differs from ours. Ethnic addiction is where some people are so obsessed with their ethnic identity that they think it is all right to harass, injure and kill those of a different ethnic background. Examples are nazis, some racists, some nationalists, some tribalists and some fundamentalist religionists. Ethnic/national addiction also explains why the US clings so obsessively to the ridiculous old English system of weights and measures instead of switching to the superior world standard metric system.
Racism has ethnic, slave and economic roots. It is not something that anyone can feel proud of. For example, white people (like me) should not use their historical roles as economically-privileged, educationally-privileged, slave-owning, empire-building, world-class-dominators-of-continents as justification for continuing to look down on and to take advantage of people of any color in order to exorbitantly multiply their own wealth. The 21st century should be a place of no war, no racism, no sweat shops and no exploitation. We need to have equal rights, equal opportunity, decent standards of living and genuine democracy all over the world.
