Good health is based on healthy genes, freedom from severely debilitating accident or illness and living a healthy lifestyle. Living a healthy lifestyle is not all that difficult absent severe problems. It is primarily a matter of eating healthy food, getting sufficient exercise and sleep, having a satisfactory social life and avoiding harmful drugs, bullets, accidents, diseases, pollution, etc.

The most important aspect of a healthy lifestyle is diet. The first thing that should be said about diet is: avoid extremes. No one rigid diet will fit all; do not choose a crash diet and do not eat/drink every food that is available. Eat a good diet now and for the rest of your life. You will have a longer, better and healthier life. The consensus of most of today's professional advice for most people is low fat, low meat or none, high fiber, high carbohydrate and vitamin/mineral rich foods. It is very important to realize that there are genetic, psychological, hormonal, cultural, age, sexual and experience differences between individuals so that a diet should be individualized for each and every one of us. Study a bit and choose a diet that suits you or get professional help. Do not be hung up on the idea or social expectation that you should eat what all the others around you are eating.

Exercise is necessary to keep essential organs in shape and to optimize weight for your body style. Choose one or more exercises that are effective, reasonably pleasant and safe for your condition. I ride my bicycle up and down hills for about 1/2 hour on most days. I also do quickie arm, leg and back exercises. Medical checkups, as advised for your condition, will also help keep you healthy.

Part of a healthy lifestyle is having a personal sense of purpose, a belief that you can contribute something good to society and friends/relatives that participate with you in social interactions.
