Winter Angel

for helen

An angel in the midst of winter
Having lost her footing fell to the ground
On the slippery, icy slope
A tumble in the snow, and I ran to her
But she laughed, she laughed heartily
I tended my hand to her and she smiled
Without uttering a single word

She wore a fushia coat and white earmuffs
How adorable, I thought
And her cheeks were red from the cold
Won't you fly away? I asked
But she giggled and grabbed my hand
We ran back up the hill
And up there on one foot she stood
And began to twirl and twirl
As I watched silently

That joy, that innocence... I had forgotten
Suddenly she stopped to look at me
With pouted lips and eyes as big as the moon
Then threw her arms in the air
And let out a most cheerful "Weee!"
As she stumbled once again, just about to fall
When I reached out to grab hold of her

But she threw herself into me
And down the slope we went rolling
Barely had I wiped the snow off my face
That she went on laughing heartily once more
Like a child who knows of nothing
But the bright side of the world

We simply lay there in the blanket of snow
Quietly looking to the blue sky
A moment of respite under the afternoon sun
And a gentle gaze as we turned to each other

She brought her hand up by her face
Oh! She exclaimed as I looked puzzled
Then she sprung her arm out and
At the tip of my nose landed her finger
Pom! She exclaimed gleefully
Then to me, just the same
I touched her nose with my finger
Pom! She went once more
How adorable, I thought again

There with her, I no longer felt cold
With our fingers still on each other's noses
She brought up her other hand
And before I could react
Pinched both of my cheeks
I squinted as she giggled
And, on her feet, began trotting away

Swiveling back, she blew me a kiss
And waved goodbye while I still sat
At the bottom of the slope
Hold on! I said, but it was too late
The lovely winter angel had flown away
I rose up and headed home
I thought, What a wonderful day
