Innocence

To be a child again
To be free and without a care in the world
No, children nowadays have lost that innocence
A world so tainted
Where even that which is intended for children
Is spoiled by the corruption of modern society
There is no innocence
And few are those who possess a pure heart
Even I am filled with darkness
Rare are the things that can appease me
A warm touch of affection
Kindness in words
Reaching for another's soul to find comfort and sanctity
I can see through her eyes
It is safe within her
A gentle smile to brighten this room filled with shadows
I wanted to return the favor, but
The sun quickly dissipated behind the same grey veil
Absence and distance soon spread darkness around once more
And the joyous faces dispersed in melancholy
Unable to find their way to where colors abound
Plunged back into the abyss
So strange, and yet so familiar
An eerily comfortable setting where I have spent too much time
A feeling of nothingness, of emptiness
A void where fear and happiness do not exist
An empty space where anguish and excitement are the same
To hope is to despair
And to love is to hate
Angry characters floating all around
Yelling and screaming and mocking heartily
Still, the echoes are silent
There is not a sound when water falls
I open my eyes but see nothing
Nothing but white, everything is white
A dream, a thought, all turns to black
Except for what stands underneath the spotlight
A young child, all by himself
Is it me?

Come here, don't be afraid

I am not

Then why don’t you come nearer
Come, I am a friend
You don’t have to stand there on your own

No, you are the one who stands alone
It is you who is afraid

What do you mean

You are afraid to come out of your dark place
You are afraid of what you may find

What will I find

That which has long been forgotten
You have forgotten it

What have I forgotten

Who you are
What you hide underneath this shell
Is the same thing that you seek within others

But you can never find it
Because you are all looking for what
Each of you hides and has forgotten
The innocent face of a child
Tears of joy and sadness
Those gentle smiles and sweet laughter
You have since moved on
That age has gone by
In wanting to become an adult you have forgotten
And many have chased away this innocence
It will not come back
For the few who have simply locked it away
Search deep within your hearts and you may find at last
That little piece of joy that you had been missing
All along
