The Breadth of Modern Biology

Modern biology is an enormous subject, consisting of numerous important disciplines of study. Certain of these disciplines are described as pure science because they are concerned with principles rather than with their application, e.g. cytology, anatomy.

Other aspects of biology are applied to particular technologies such as medicine or agriculture. Applied disciplines made pathology and immunology.

Science develops by simplification and subdivision of complex and intractable problems. Examples are nutrition, enzymology and dietetics.

Biology has strong links with physics, chemistry, mathematics and computing, geography and geology. Resulting in biochemistry, biophysics and biogeography.
