Conclusion & Recommendation

The Baygon brand was found to be more effective than Mortein in eradicating cockroaches. The differentiating factor would probably be due to the presence of the 3 different chemical groups: namely carbamates, pyrethroids and organophosphates. These chemicals attack the nervous system, respiratory tract, stomach and cardiovascular muscles simultaneously causing instantaneous death.

Mortein, on the other hand, contain only pyrethroids that attack the nervous system and stomach. Therefore it took a longer time to witness any physical symptoms to occur.

Consumers should take note of the chemicals used for killing roaches when purchasing insecticides. Choice of an effective insecticide should contain all 3 chemical groups: carbamates, pyrethroids and organophosphates. Consumers should also be aware that there would be changes in the chemical components of insecticides in the future. This is because repetitive use of insecticides may increase the possibilities of the cockroaches developing resistance to these insecticides.
