Colonel Borman is best known as commander of the Apollo VIII space flight, first manned lunar orbital mission in December, 1958, and previously as commander of the Gemini VII mission in 1965. In 1967, he served as a member of the Apollo 204 Fire Investigation Board and later became the Apollo program resident manager, heading the team that reengineered the Apollo spacecraft. He also served as field director of NASA's Space Station Task Force.
Frank Borman became an Eastern Airlines vice president in July of 1970. His association with Eastern began in early 1969 when he served the company as special advisor. He was named senior vice president-operations group in December of 1970 with administrative responsibility for the company's engineering and maintenance, flight operations and operational coordination divisions. He served in the airline in various capacities and he became chairman of the Board on December 15, 1976.
In 1966 and 1968, Colonel Borman served as special presidential ambassador on trips throughout the Far East and Europe. In 1970, he undertook another special presidential mission, a worldwide tour to seek support for the release of American prisoners of war held by North Vietnam.
