July 2006 Meteor Showers

July has one semi-major meteor shower and one minor shower worth noting here, the Southern Delta Aquarids and the Alpha Capricornids.

Although the Southern Delta Aquarids peak on July 28, some may be seen during the period from July 14 through August 17. This shower produces around 20 meteors per hour at its peak, or about one meteor every three minutes on average. Fortunately in 2006 the Moon will offer no interference. While Southern Hemisphere observers are favored for this shower, those of us north of the equator can observe these as well. The Alpha Capricornids peak around the July 31st with a rate of 4 meteors per hour.

I have created a low volume email list for advance notification of upcoming meteor showers and unusual astronomical events; especially those that can be observed with the unaided eye, binoculars, or a small telescope. To join, simply enter your email address below and click on the join now button.
