The Chinese American Society of Mass Spectrometry (CASMS) annual meeting was held on June 15, 1999 in Dallas, Texas. Despite a thunder storm and heavy pouring rain, one hundred and forty-seven members attended the meeting. This meeting was organized by the executive board members: President: Huayi Tong Ciba Specialty Chemicals Corp. Treasurer: Jia-Shen Wang Worldwide Beauty Care Group Secretary: Tacheng Hsieh BASF Corporation Member at Large: Ada Kong U.S. Department of Energy Emeritus President: Ted Chang Cytec Industries Inc. Past President: Sam Hsu Exxon Research & Engineering Co. We especially thank our president, Huayi Tong, for his efforts in finding a meeting place. Highlights of the meeting: 1. CASMS Directory Secretary, Tacheng Hsieh, had e-mailed our directory to all members in December 1998. In addition, hard copies of the directory were distributed at the meeting. Member profiles we collected at this meeting will be updated. Contact Tacheng Hsieh at hsieht@basf-corp.com for any corrections or questions regarding the directory. 2. Membership Fee Members that attended the meeting paid their membership fees. The funds we collected will be used for general administrative expenses. We are working on creating our own Web home page and the expenses of maintaining it on the Web will be coming from these funds. For those who could not attend the meeting but would like to pay their membership fees or make contributions, contact our CFO, Jia-Shen Wang, at jia-shen.wang@bms.com. 3. Meeting Photographs (not uploaded yet) As in the old saying: "A picture is worth a thousand words." The memorable moments of this year's meeting were captured in pictures by David Chang, Hoffmann La Roche, Inc. You may view these pictures at the end of this document. David, thank you for keeping these memories alive. Since our first meeting in 1981, our group has grown in size and stature. As the new millennium is approaching, we would like to hear from you for ideas on the future direction of our group, including ways to impact ASMS and better disseminate scientific information among the community. If you would like to share your ideas with us, please contact our president, Huayi Tong, at huayi.tong@cibasc.com. Remember, our goals are creativity and collaboration.
The Chinese American Society of Mass Spectrometry (CASMS) annual meeting was held on June 3, 1998 in Orlando, Florida. It was attended by more than one hundred members. At the meeting, new executive board members were elected: Dr. Sam Hsu, President; Dr. Huayi Tong, Vice President; Dr. Jia-Shen Wang, Treasurer; Dr. Tacheng Hsieh, Secretary; and Ada Kong, Member at Large. A day earlier, June 2, 1998, a special gathering was held in honor of the first President of CASMS, Dr. Ted Chang. In 1981, a group of Chinese-American ASMS conferees established the CASMS in New York City. Dr. Ted Chang, the organizer of the meeting, was elected as its first President. He continued to serve in that capacity until 1997. The mission of CASMS is to promote academic and social interactions among Chinese scientists. Over the years, CASMS has grown and become an international organization with members from all over the world, including China, Canada, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan, and the United States. Dr. Sam Hsu, the CASMS President, on behalf of all members presented a plaque to Dr. Chang in recognition of his contributions to the society. Dr. Chang was also honored as President Emeritus of CASMS.
Dr. Kuangnan Qian from W. R. Grace Co. joined Corporate Research of Exxon Research and Engineering Company at Clinton, New Jersey on January 26, 1998. Dr. Jia-Shen Wang of Bristol-Myers Squibb (Clarol) has been elected as the Chairman of the Connecticut Mass Spectrometry Discussion Group for the year of 1997-1998. At the 1997 Palm Springs Society Dinner, Dr. Teh Chang of Cytech announced his retirement as the President of the Society for more than 15 years. He is succeeded by Dr. Chang Samuel Hsu of Exxon to serve for a 2-year term. The President-Elect is Dr. Hua-yi Tong of Ciba-Geiby. Dr. Tacheng Hsieh is the Secretary and Dr. Jia-shen Wang is the Treasurer. We appreciate very much Teh's effort over the years to organize our society.
Retirement
Yulin (Liu) Tang Retired in October, 1997 after 32 Years of Service at DOE
Dr. Yulin Tan, one of the earliest CASMS members, retired in October 1997 after serving in the U.S. Department of Energy at the Environmental Measurements Laboratory (EML) for twenty-two years. EML, a descendant of the Manhattan Project, was established in 1947. It is well recognized as a national and international leader in low-level environmental radiation and radioactivity measurements. When Yulin joined EML in 1975, she expanded the laboratory's research to include analyzing environmental organic pollutants using GC/MS. She has devoted her research primarily to the study of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and has become well known in her field. In 1985, she was officially invited by the United Nations as a participant in the Transfer of Know-How Through Expatriate Nationals” to give lecture tours in the People's’ Republic of China. Over the years she has given numerous presentations both in the United States and abroad. Her research work has been published in prestigious journals and in internationally known procedure manuals. She will not only be missed at EML for her scientific contributions but also for her warm smile and way of making people feel comfortable. Many people at EML remember the graceful way she taught Tai Chi classes after work. On December 6, 1997, some local CASMS members hosted a retirement party to honor Yulin Tan. The party was held at the home of Jia-Shen Wang, Chairman of the ACS Connecticut Mass Spectrometry Discussion Group, in New Canaan, Connecticut. Nine people attended: Jia-Shen Wang and his wife, Helen; Ted Chang and his wife, Kate; Huayi Tong and his wife, Helena; Shida Shen; Feng-Yin Hsieh; and Ada Kong. The people who attended brought their own food to the party and the Best Gourmet” award went to Helena Tong. Everyone loved the beautiful and delicious pastry she made. She demonstrated how to make them and gave everyone her recipe. The highlight of the party was the presentation of the gift to Yulin Tan by Ted Chang, our CASMS Honorary President. His sense of humor brought a lot of laughter to all.
