KGS MESSAGE OF THE DAY

3/15/2001 Message of the Day
Christopher Duvall, Meteorologist, Rutgers University cduvall@rci.rutgers.edu
Office of the NJ State Climatologist

Precipitation:

A large area of clouds and precipitation will stretch from eastern portions of the Plains across the Appalachian Mountains and along much of the East Coast today. This system will move eastward through tomorrow.

Temperature:

Temperatures will begin to rise today and tomorrow along the West Coast, with cooler temperatures underneath all of the clouds and precipitation in the eastern half of the country.

Challenge Questions: Is there anywhere in the U.S. that will experience a high temperature that is below freezing, today? Are these the same places that were below freezing two weeks ago, on 3/1/2001? Is the area of the U.S. with colder air (below freezing) larger, smaller, or about the same as it was on 3/1/2001? One place you can look up the temperature maps for today and 3/1/2001 is the WeatherWorld 2010 web site at:
http://ww2010.atmos.uiuc.edu/(Gh)/wx/surface.rxml
Click on the "Archive" button when you look at a temperature map, to find the 3/1/2001 maps. Make sure you look at the same time of day for both days.
