History of International Women's Day
-
International Women's Day (March 8) celebrates the story of ordinary
women as makers of history. Since its inaugural observation in 1911, the
day has provided a rallying point for women throughout the world to acknowledge
the progress they have made toward emancipation and to survey the victories
they have yet to win.
-
"The Baha'i communities in the metro area," said Hoda Erfany
of Metairie, "want to play our part in creating a climate of social justice
so that women attain full partnership with men. For that reason, we are
working with both women and men to bring about an appreciation of the need
for full human rights for women."
-
Diane Broussard of LaPlace further added that "Baha'i members
around the nation are calling for US senators to vote for ratification
of the United Nations' Convention on Elimination of all forms of Discrimination
Against Women (the Women's Convention)". The Women's Convention is an international
bill of rights for women. It brings together and extends the provisions
of previous United Nations' instruments concerning discrimination on the
basis of sex. Further, it strengthens the existing human rights standards
by giving a uniform definition of discrimination against women.?#060;/b>
