You start in the first year with small things such as turning matches into needles and progress to changing beetles into buttons, rabbits into slippers at later stages. Transfiguration is not just saying a few words while waving your wand it also involves other things so you end up with pages of complicated notes to look at and remember while you attempt to transform your object.
