Jurassic Ammonites
in Southern India, a part of Hindus worship these
Ammonites as Saligrams. These moluscs are
embedded in black shale rocks and are found in
the Ganthagi river in Nepal. In some Saligrams,
water is trapped inside and can be heard
splashing in. Such formations are called
Enhydros. A sect of Hindus worship these as
sacred stones as an incarnate of Lord Vishnu in
the form of coiled snake. The women are not
allowed to touch it and it is usually hung in an
earthern pot from the roof or kept in reverence
in a silver or a brass box. This is usually
passed on from generation to generation to the
eldest sons and it is also a part of the dowry.
Shown here are varieties of such Ammonites -
Saligrams including twin concretion. This is
usually cut open to reveal the inner sections. |
