Engineers in Australia are trying to tap power from the jet stream.  The plan uses a helicopter-like device that is tethered to buoys in the ocean.  The device will lift itself because of the shape of the rotors and once it has enough lift to keep it aloft it will then begin using excess energy to create the electricity that then sent back down to Earth.

If you need a computer the can fold up like a handkerchief research being done at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory will help you.  The scientists there have developed an ultra thin coating that blocks oxygen and moisture without disturbing the transmission of light.  The display combines the flexibility of plastic with the protection of glass.

In 1988 Russia flew a space shuttle like spacecraft for 2 Earth orbits.  The “Buran” was slightly larger than the NASA shuttles and it was intended as a military space plane.  Russia made several designs, one of which they claim could travel to Mars.  Before they could begin manned space flights, however, the Soviet Union fell apart.

Another step towards landing on Mars may soon take place.  A nuclear rocket could reduce the time of the trip to less than two weeks.  The new rocket would be powered by americium.  Using americium means the fuel will weight much less then rockets powered by uranium or plutonium since the fuel only needs to be cased in a thin film and not a thick rod.  The engine could work in two ways, it could simply spew out a stream of energetic particles, or those particles could be used to head a propellant.
