September 1999 A new air traffic control system linked to GPS satellites could reduce travel delays. The system would allow pilots to chose their own route without having to consult air traffic controllers. The plane would be equipped with an instrument called ADS-B which stands for automatic dependent surveillance broadcast. The system would show pilots the position of every aircraft within 160 miles. A new satellite will allow astronomers to test their basic theories of the universe. The Far Ultraviolet Spectroscope Explorer collects light from the ultraviolet portion of the spectrum with greater sensitivity than was previously possible. The European Space Agency is launching a new weather satellite that will send back weather patterns on Earth every 15 minutes. The satellite is expected to improve weather forecasts. Asteroids that may collide with Earth are now ranked by how likely they are to cause damage to Earth. The Torino scale is similar to the scale for ranking tornadoes. A 0 means the asteroid would burn up in Earth's atmosphere. A ten means the asteroid could cause global climate changes. Currently no asteroid ranks above 1. Cannon has made its ELPH camera even smaller, it is 13% smaller than its original ELPF. The camera now also includes a 2x zoom lens, a shutter speed of 1/900 second and a Light Guide flash. It uses the APS film format so it can take three picture sizes. Innomedia has created a picture phone that hooks up to a TV. The set top box includes a camera and can be connected to a camcorder so you can send someone a video. |
