Interactive Mathematics with Projects
This course uses non-classroom situations to help make
algebraic and geometric ideas interesting and useful. Departing from
the traditional math curriculum, IMP employs an integrated, cross-discipline
approach that includes more mathematics topics than the traditional curriculum.
The course is built around central problems that connect math to such disciplines
as literature, history, science,, and business in order to show students
the usefulness and necessity of mathematical skills. Activities include
Edgar Allen Poe's The Pit and the Pendulum , The Game
of Pig, The Baker's Choice, and The Overland Trail. Students
will become involved in a variety of activities that also develop interpersonal
skills.
