Two issues that bug me:One. why change our name? It is recognized, has a positive history, and can be interpreted in any way you want, not just as a flunky who does odd Medical jobs.
Second, what is this fixation on Masters degrees. I thought the concept of the PA, included a low cost medical provided that could be educated ,(trained) quickly, to provide 80% of primary care needs of a physician's patients.Where have I gone wrong in
guiding the new PA educators? Why do we have to compete with other less qualified midlevel providers dictates. Mississippi he we come. Before you know it You'll need a PhD to be a PA.??? Duah!!!Go back to the beginnings of the field, stop ego gradific
tion, and pseudo MD seeking.

I am going to be applying to the only PA Program in Minnesota. I went to school several years ago to be a Surgical Technician, and was certified, but let my certification lapse. I never persued a career as a Surgical Technician, and went back to school
o get my BA. Except for my Senior Thesis, I am finished with my BA, but do not have the chemistry, and a couple of the other prerequisites. I have never been employed in any medical field, and don't know what to do. How heavily does having past medical

This message is to give hope to the people out there trying to get into P.A school. I am currently a senior at the University of Kentucky and was just granted admission to the College of West Verginia for P.A. My G.P.A was not great(3.2 overall) and My A
HAT score was average.I have had experience in the medical field in several different settings. I had 160 hrs. of volunteer experience in the E.R and O.R. I have also worked at the U.K. hospital as a C.N.A for one year after getting my certification one y
ar ago. There are three things that get the interview, GPA,experience and GRE scores or APHAT scores depending on the school you are applying to. The interview process is easy just be yourself and dont lie. Try not to be nervous and smile even if its fake.
If anybody has any question's e- mail me. I probably wont know the answer but I will make something up.

Hi...I am starting the Surgical Physician Assistant program at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) this fall. If any of you out there are alumni at this program I would love to hear from you and about your past experiences. If any of you out t
ere have any questions about UAB's program, I would also like to hear from you. I obviously don't have all the answers but I'll do my best! Also, if you have any other general PA questions or comments, please let me know. As for general advice... If yo
really want to get into a PA program, keep plugging at it! It can be done. I did it in two and a half years WITHOUT a BA. The best advice is to attack those prereqs with as much as youve got...leaving all but the most important life issues (except God
and family, of course) behind you so that you can keep your GPA up. As far as medical experience, you almost have to have it so get it any way you can! For more info...come see my page (the link above).
Also...thanks Craig! This a great site. I'd really like to get in touch with you and get some tips for my own.

I've been accepted into a PA program that begins this August. I just got through with nursing school ( got my license just last week!) I think the fact that I had a BSN was one of the reasons I was accepted into the program. Next week I'm starting my firs
nursing job in a pediatric ICU. The hospital I'll be working for knows that once the program starts I'll only be able to work part time and they are willing to be flexible with my schedule.
For those of you applying for programs I think one of the best things you can do is continue taking classes and working towards other degrees or certifications untill you get accepted. Become an EMT, work in an ER. Be a nurse, Keep your mind and hands in
he mix. Doesn't have to be full time in either. Don't become a obssessed freak. If you have a life: keep it. If not: GET ONE!
Good Luck to all! <------AL------>

To Jean and Nikki(nursing students),
, I hate to burst your bubbles but I am a seasoned RN with a BSN who is finding it hard to get an interview to PA school because nursing pre-reqs are not considered advanced enough. I'm speaking specifically of the chemistries. If you are serious ab
ut going to PA school, get your BS in Biology so that you will have no problems with your pre-reqs. Also, there is no way you will get in without some clinical experience. I suggest practicing in ER or ICU for a couple of years at least. I'm learning t
e hard way that a ton of experience doesn't always get you in.

Kristi ... I'm a first year PA student at George Washington University (a great school, by the way)... in answer to your question... for 1996 the mean salary for PAs was $65,125 with a median of $60,687. The mean salary for first year graduates was $56,3
8. If you want more information, go to the web page of the American Academy of Physician Assistants at www.aapa.org and click on PA facts, data, and statistics. About financial aid, there's a lot out there in the way of loans -- here at GWU, we can get
p to $18,500 every 2 semesters in federal loans; anything else has to be taken out in private loans. There are also some scholarships out there; if you e-mail the AAPA at aapa@aapa.org , they can probably give you some specifics.
Hope this helps!

I am beginning the Spokane WA MEDEX Northwest P.A. program. I have an udergraduate degree in sociology and a MSW from Ohio State University. I am 31 years old with seven years of health care experience, primarily in psych. I would be interested in talk
ng to anyone who has questions about MEDEX, or general questions about P.A. school. I am especially interested in talking with other people who are non-traditional students like myself. I am married hve two pre-school age children. Please e-mail me.

(PA status) Still trying to get into a program
I'm currently in the process of searching for a PA program. I am in my third year of undergrad and am checking into schools that I can apply to this fall.
If anyone out there knows any information about schools that accept students without a B.S. and with 500 hours of clinical experience I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks!

Hey Ron...sounds to me like the only thing you may be missing is your prereqs. Your first step should be to check with the programs you'd like to attend and find out what courses they require for acceptance and start taking them.
While your taking them I'd recommend shadowing a PA, if you haven't already, to forge a relationship that could lead to the HIGHLY recommended PA letter of recommendation as well as showing you have taken the steps to find out all you can about the profes
ion and what is actually involved.
Yoyu might also think about joining the AAPA and any other associations you qualify for.

I am an ex-US Navy senior corpsman. However, my undergraduate degree is in communication as is my masters. However, I have missed my work with patients and am thinking about the PA program. While I have a "few" medical classes while I was an undergradu
te, I don't have a lot. In addtion, I graduated more than 15 years ago. Do you have any recommendations of where I could begin? I work at a major Army Medical Center as their public affairs officer. Thanks, Ron

Tim...From the little background you provided I would say you have a
good chance at gaining acceptance into a program...if your GPA
has been maintained at 3.0 it shouldn't hurt to much with your
medical background. If you satrted out around 4.0 and have ended
with a 2.0 it might not look as good. It also depends on what
classes you have taken...among other things. I guess you'll never
know until you try though.
