Great website Jim! Lots of useful info. I have just recently gotten back into astronomy since the Hale-Bopp event in '97. I dug out my old 60mm spotting scope to view the comet and was instantly hooked again. Your photo of Hyakatake is stunning! I've spent a lot of time scanning the skies with 10x50 binoculars since my re-introduction to amateur astronomy, but this past Christmas got a 4.5" reflector on an equatorial mount (Meade 4500). Hope to up-grade to an LX50 10" someday soon and when I do I ll be back here to gather the valuable information you have so generously provided to the amateur community. I just purchased an 8inch LX 200 and am just starting my observations (visual). I think your astrophotos are fantastic, and am much encouraged that the LX200 is that capable. We get a lot of cloudy weather here in Cleveland, so I haven't had much luck y t, but spring is here and clear skies are coming! Someday I would like to get started with CCD or astrophotography, maybe in a year. HI, You've got the only usable info I've found on trying to do astrophotography with just a camera. Plan try to use the barn door approach. Have an ancient 800/f8 refractor (camera lens), 80-200/f2.8 zoom, 300/f4, 24-120/f3.4-5.6 (forget that one), 85/f1.8, and 50/f1.4. Thinking the 80-200 and 300 are the best bet (the 800 is about 3 ft long and would be a bear to try to track with - but you know I gotta try it!) I have a heavy bogen tripod with a ball head. So let me see if I have this right. First cut a couple of wedges to match my latitude (probably permanently mount them for rigidity). Use a level to make sure the bottom of the barn door is level to both pe pendicular horizons, and use some sort of sighting device to align the perpendicular line along the hinged end with Polaris? Ok. Doesn't sound impossible yet . . . and then manually rotate the camera "a little bit" every 15 seconds? (Will try to figure exact amount.) If I get lucky and can find some kind of gearing it might be easier. I'd rotate the camera the same amount regardless of the lens used, correct? Before I turn myself into a total masochist here, what's about the best image I'd be able to get with a 200 or 300 mm lens (4x - 6x)? Assuming I could get the tracking part down, how long an exposure should I stop at? I'd imagine that 5 minutes would gi e me a lot of stars. If I went 30 minutes (and didn't get about 50 million ghost images from bad tracking) would the images be worth the probable severe finger cramping I'd end up with? I've been using the new Fuji 100 / 1000 slide film for shooting eag e with the 800/8. It's great up to ASA 800, but starts falling apart with inconsistant results at 1000. I also use Fuji Velvia (ASA 50) and Astia (100). Shooting these at ASA 40 and 80 give excellent color saturation, but I'm not sure it would work the same here. Actually, I just got an idea on how to automate the process (tracking), but that would take the "fun" out of it, right? After all, I still have some dues to pay before I get to try doing that, right? How hard do you think it would be to try making a manageable (for hiking around for shooting pictures) reflector for terrestrial / astro photography that would be, say, 1500 f/5? Any ideas for sources for material and/or a good "how to" book? I could ge a busted up camera lens to provide the camera mount. If I salvaged the lens's diaphram would that be accurate "enough"? Sorry. I just realized how long-winded I'm being. If I ever get this to work I'll send you some of my less embarassing results. Feel free to respond and tell me how silly these ideas are. I enjoyed looking at the many facets of your links and your work you have shown on here. You seem very talented and also very humorous. A good combination for an astronomer. I have just begun to get into astronomy with my finance. We work out of the TAS ( acoma Astronomical Society) I am newer at this than my fiance. He has been viewing the sky for 6 years now. I have bought a used C8 Ultima and am interested in astrophotography. I have a Minolta SRT 201 35mm camera that is never used anymore, I read a lot about CCD imaging and wonder if this a good format to invest in. My first scope was a 6" Newtonian without a clock drive. Hey Jim, very nice site. I enjoyed it alot. I am an astronomy enthusiast and am just trying to get into astrophotography, your page has a lot of information that is very helpful to me. I drift in and out of the hobby, being from Boston it is difficult ot to get light pollution, and knowing just about nothing about astrophotography it is somewhat disheartening when there is no one around to teach what even the terms of the hobby mean! I bought one of those "department store" telescopes bragging about h gh power and those kinds of things, but soon learned that it is just about useless. Maybe i will salvage the tripod for a camera only mount or something. Do you (or anyone else) have any suggestions on a good beginner telescope that i could possibly ord r and hook a camera up to? Really nice shots, Jim. This is "stellarpod" from Sat. night's chat (1/16). Let me ask you something: being a cotton farmer and all... doesn't the Trifid Nebulae remind you of a boll of cotton? I was raised in W. Texas where they do a fair amount of cot on farming (or used to)and I never see an image of the Trifid without harkening back to those fields! Hello, how are you? I really enjoy looking at astro pics and one day hope to have the equipement needed. I have a cheap 60mm that my Grand father gave to me 2 years ago which got me on this expensive hobby that I love so much. I also have an Orion Skyview 4.5 in. which is the only one I use now. A pair of 10x50WA binoculars work pretty good also.

I'm interested in astronomy and I'm trying to get a more solid footing in this area. I have to admit I had some misconceptions about it. I thought a person my need more science background with math etc. to understand these things. Nice looking observatory. I intend to build a similar model in my backyard. I live 10 miles "out in the country" with no train tracks nearby, however, there is a paved road 1/4 mile from my house with some large truck traffic.
