Geocities is divided into theme based neighborhoods. I have a web site there
and have been very happy with it.
Geocities takes its hits for being slow at times but overall I'd say they do
a very good job. Also they've been around a while and look like they are in

Tripod update 10/15/97 Tripod has adopted a new advertising system. Instead of
placing an ad on the bottom of your page, a new window opens with an ad when
someone opens your page. Free web page 2mb limit. Use your own html or their
easy editor. You can ftp files or use their file manager. Easy place for a
beginner to build a web page. Tripods always worked well for me. I would reccomend
Tripod as a place to start, you can build a page with basic knowledge

One Stop - added 9/13/97 update 11/04/97- Free web space, 2mb limit with ftp access,
banner required. They allow you to sell advertising or advertise your own
business. They put a banner at the top of your page but the fact that they allow
commercial use is a big plus.

Rampage - added

now offering 100mb of space and CGI access. It sounds to good to be true but
Rampage has provided good service in the past so who knows. I have updated the
url you may need to add 100mb.html to the end. I like Rampage a lot, ftp access

Fortune City - Free web pages, 6mb of space, banner
required. like Geocities it is divided into neighborhoods, though it isn't as theme
based. Easy to use file manager, especially with Netscape, makes maintaining
your site a breeze.
They have moved to a new server and access time has improved greatly. I have
noticed a major improvement in the time it takes to upload
files and page load time. I have had problems in the past with Fortune City
but it looks like they have taken the proper steps to correct those problems.

out there site like streets, you pick a section you want to join and pick a
building marked vacant. Well it seems most of the sites listed as vacant aren't.
Which makes joining a hassle. If you have joined Fortune City recently let me
know. Well a lot of people have let me know and the response has been
overwhelmingly negative. The main area of complaint has been the file manager. It seems

Phrantic offers 3mb and ftp access, they are not currently accepting new members
but it may be one to keep an eye on. I think its a good sign when a service

Sounds to good to be true and maybe it is. I applied and got an account within 10

Chez - update 10/03/97 Free web page 10mb limit. This site is in French, if
you know French great, if you don't you may have problems.
I can't even pronounce oui and I was able to sign up without very much
trouble. Ftp access, free e-mail account.
Chez has worked well for me ftp access and load time have been acceptable. I
did receive some negative feedback on Chez for being slow.
Connie informed me that Chez requires pages to be in French. I know of a
few sites that are in English, will they delete you for that. Who know's, I
haven't seen any evidence of it. Rob Van Vliet's Supermodel page was in English
and was deleted, possibly for erotic content. If you want a page at Chez put
