KGS MESSAGE OF THE DAY 3/07/2001 Matt Gilmore, National Severe Storms Laboratory, Ph.D. Research Meteorologist Precipitation: Coastal Maine will see rain today with snow further inland. The largest precipitation amount will occur in south central Arizona as the Pacific low pressure system over California yesterday moves further east. However, no flooding is expected. Weak thunderstorms are possible in the Southwestern US. They are most likely Wednesday afternoon in Arizona and New Mexico and evening in West Texas. Temperature: Below normal temperature will continue in much of the NE United States in wake of the low pressure system that moved off over the Atlantic Ocean. Temperature will be mild along the Pacific Ocean coastline. Record-setting high temperature is likely at locations in Washington and Oregon again today. They were as much as 17 F above normal yesterday in certain locations in Washington and Oregon. Both Salem and Portland, Oregon broke their record high temperature for that date yesterday. Challenge Question: What does it mean for a city to break its temperature record for a given date? What is the difference between that and a city breaking its all-time temperature record?
