Forecast of the Day 2/17/2000 C. Duvall Howdy! Highs and Lows: High pressure centered over the Great Lakes is helping to keep the weather calm, except for the Low in Nevada as of Wednesday night. Lows move around Highs, so the Low coming out of Nevada will move south of the High that is in its way, up by Lake Superior. We will likely see clouds and rain ahead and south of the Low as it moves toward Kansas on Thursday. The Low will move steadily out of the Kansas area by Thursday evening. Friday may see the Low move up towards Indiana. California just got some showers Wednesday from this Low that is moving toward Kansas, but they should have lots of sun today before another Low brings more showers sometime this weekend. Temperatures and Precipitation: Temperatures in most areas will be normal to a bit above normal with lots of sun for most of the country during the afternoon hours. Oklahoma and Texas will be interesting to watch tomorrow, because that is where the warm, humid air and the cold air will meet. Wherever they meet, you will likely see lots of clouds and maybe a bad storm or two in the warm air, and a big area of rain a little ways north in the cold air. Watch where the storms start and how they move and change shape throughout the day. The worst storms should occur during the afternoon, say 2-6pm Eastern Time. Are the worst storms on their own or part of a big area of rain? Are they in the warm air or the cold air? Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, and the southeast U.S. will be the only areas with enough moisture to produce rain Thursday. Where is the "fuel", or the moist air for the storms coming from? Some small amounts of snow may occur Thursday morning in Colorado and south of the Great Lakes around New York, otherwise everywhere else will have pleasant, dry weather. Overall: The winds moving around the High will help to create some more lake effect snow- especially around New York, through Thursday afternoon. Keep an eye on Oklahoma and eastern Texas for the most active weather during the day, with the possibility for some hail in one or two of the storms. I will be available most of today via the bulletin board if anyone has any questions about today's weather. Hope this helps! c ya... -CD -------------------------------
