Apprentice

Multi-Purpose Advanced Trainer

The Apprentice is an advanced jet training aircraft with a secondary ground attack mission. The request for proposal specified the carriage of 12 Mk 81 250 lb. bombs, 2 AIM-120-A AMRAAM medium range, active radar homing air-to-air missiles, and the SUU-23/A 20mm gun pod.

The Apprentice carries the Hughes APG-65 radar (the same radar is carried by the F/A-18 Hornet) which is liquid cooled, pulse doppler radar with track while scan, can track up to 10 targets simultaneously, has raid-assesment mode, and has doppler beam sharpening for air to ground clarity.

The MPAT Apprentice was designed from scratch by:

It is the product of 10 weeks of research and work, fully developed using CADAM software, and tested for stability in a flight simulator located at Georgia Tech.

The designers were all students of M.W.M. Jenkins at the Georgia Tech School of Aerospace Engineering taking senior design, Spring 1996.
