Description
The Mirage 2000 is a single seat, multi-role interceptor and air superiority warplane.

History and Features
The Mirage 2000 began it's development when the French government approved the development of a new delta wing fighter in 1975. The Mirage 2000 first flew on March 10, 1978, and the first French Air Force Mirage 2000 squadron became operational in July 1984.

The Mirage 2000's delta wing increases lifting capacity and greatly improves the aircraft's low speed, low altitude performance. Additionally, the delta wing facilitates sharper high speed turns at high attitudes. However, the large wing makes the Mirage 2000 a gas guzzler at low attitudes and speeds. The Mirage 2000 maintains control using a fly-by-wire computer operated system. This system automatically adjusts the aircraft's control surfaces and engine output to keep the aircraft stable.

The Mirage 2000 is a heavily armed aircraft. It's nine hard points can carry 13,890 pounds of weapons, including air to air and other various missiles, rockets, and bombs. The aircraft is also equipped with two 30mm cannons. Although it's performance as a low altitude strike fighter is less then desired, the Mirage 2000 has proved to be an extremely successful fighter interceptor. In addition to the French Air Force, the Mirage 2000 is flown by the air forces of many foreign countries.
