Description
History and Features
The F-14 Tomcat first saw combat action when two Navy F-14s engaged and shot down two Libyan Su-22 fighters over the Gulf of Sidra in the Mediterranean sea on August 19, 1981, when the latter attempted to attack the aircraft carrier Nimitz. F-14s also provided air cover for the joint strike on Libyan terrorist targets in 1986. On January 4, 1989, two F-14s from the carrier John F. Kennedy shot down two Libyan MiG-23s in the same area as in 1981. General Characteristics
