Terry Tarrant(s) (c.1772-1841)

About 1801 the first members of the Tarrant family arrived in Warren Co. KY from Greenville Dist., SC. They included Samuel Tarrant and at least one of his children (Minos); Samuel's sister, Elizabeth Kirby, wife of David Kirby; and Samuel's nephew Terry Tarrant. Samuel, Elizabeth and Terry's father Leonard were all children of Leonard Tarrant Sr. Who died in Greenville Dist., SC in 1791. The Tarrant family had moved to SC from VA at the close of the Revolution.

Terry's father, Leonard Jr., died in 1777 while a Captain in the Henry Co. VA militia. He and wife Mary (Tankersley??) had 6 children; Larkin, Reuben, Carter, Winifred, Terry, and Rachel. Reuben, Carter, and Winifred (wife of Daniel McKenzie) also emigrated to KY, settling the central part of the state (Garrard, Woodford Counties). Larkin remained in SC and Rachel (wife of Robert Bolling), came to TN.

Terry (c.1772-1841) married first Anna Stephenson, daughter of James and Mary (Young) Stephenson, in Greenville Dist. SC and they had three sons; Terry, Lott, and Erasmus. Terry and Anna separated about 1800 and came separately to KY. Anna settled near what is now Franklin in Simpson Co. with her three sons. Her son Terry married Mary Brown and remained in that area all his life but his mother Anna and her sons Erasmus and Lott moved to Missouri about 1831. Anna and Erasmus settled in Clay Co. MO. Anna never remarried.

Terry came to Warren Co. KY and married Mary Patrick (1788-1853), daughter of John and Sarah (Kendrick) Patrick, on 19 July 1801 in Warren County KY. They settled along Swan Creek in the Greencastle community and raised a large family: (1) Mary, m. Jacob Sharrer, (2) John, m. Letitia Manning, (3) Elizabeth, m. Britton Morrow, (4) Leonard, m. Martha Otey, (5) James, m. Martha Lankford, (6) Sarah, m. John Manning, (7) Nancy, m. James Manning, (8)William, m. Eleanor Lankford, (9) Matilda, m. Doherty, (10) Terry Jr., m. Carter Tarrant(s), son of Terry, was born about 1823 in Warren Co. KY. He married Sarah Ann Eliza Hudnall on 9 March 1850 and they lived near Greencastle where Carter was a carpenter. Sarah (1831-c.1905) was the daughter of Joseph Warner Hudnall and Mariah Morrow. Carter and Sarah had 7 children: (1) Mary who never married, (2) Joseph Terry, m. Eliza ______, (3) Thomas, (4) George, never married, (5) James (Napoleon), m. Anna Ferguson, (6) Robert, m. Lula Young, (7) John William. Carter died on 10 September 1863 while serving in Co. F, 12th KY Cavalry (Union) during the Civil War. Sarah remarried in 1871 to Green Rober(t)son and they had a daughter, Etta, and lived in Ohio Co. KY.

James (nicknamed Napoleon) Tarrants, son of Carter was born 27 October 1857 in Warren Co. KY and, because of his father's early death, was raised by relatives in and around Greencastle. He married on 13 June 1883 Anna Ferguson in Butler Co. KY. Anna was the daughter of John E. and Nancy (Austin) Ferguson of Woodbury, Butler Co. KY. They had 6 children: (1) Edward (1886-1948), m.
