You are not a pilot and you don't know anything about aviation ? You don't like airplanes ? Just read the following and you'll change your mind.

Daytona Beach INT'L airport

I'm a private pilot. I was used to fly in Daytona Beach, Florida. Daytona is the home of Nascar races. I was there when they raced for the Pepsi 400, the airport gets so much traffic that they reserve an entire runway (16/34) to park the airplanes. It's a very interesting place, you can hear the cars practicing inside the speedway even if you live miles far away from the speedway ! The weather in Daytona is fine, they have high temperature and very high humidity conditions. This implies a very high density altidude. I remember that one day the automated ATIS of Daytona was reporting a density altidude of 2,200 feet while the field elevation of the airport is 35 feet !!!

Probably you are wondering why I went to fly in America if I'm Italian. Well things are that Italy sucks, general aviation is almost non-existent. Fuel is too expensive, airplane rents are amazingly expensive, when you want to go for a cross-country you have to pay handling taxes at the destination any many other things that cause flying in Italy impossible for me. Probably you may want to find out exactly how much is the difference between Italy and US. Yes, after you read my beautiful comparison, you American guys must be very proud to be American, while I'll always be sick to be Italian !!

Daytona Beach International airport is a class charlie airspace, it has 3 runways, the biggest is 10,500 feet long. That is the 7L/25R runway, they also a parallel one which is shorter and is used by airplanes which make often closed traffic, or it's assigned you whenever you come from south or you depart for a southern destination. There's runway 16/34, it's a nice one because it cuts the two parallels. Runway 16 final crosses the main road of Daytona: International Speedway Boulevard. I was sitting inside a Burger King, having lunch, and I was facing outside looking the final. I didn't expect anything, and I suddenly saw a huge Delta B737 that was about to land on runway 16. That was amazing, they were LOW !! You probably could see the passengers inside the airplane !

Flight schools

My flight school was Phoenix East Aviation.
It's a nice flight school, they have a big fleet of airplanes to fly with, many Cessna 152 and 172, PA28, seminoles, senecas, and many other. They have interesting courses because they're an approved FAA 141 flight school. I'm sure that you will learn more about them if you personally go to visit their own web site.

Air traffic in Daytona

continental B737 taxiing They have a lot of traffic there in Daytona, this means that if you take your flight training in that airport you are going to become an experienced pilot. I've heard stories of many guys who have been flying only in uncontrolled airports, that they are scared to go to busier airports like Daytona. There's heavy traffic, too. You can see Delta, UsAir, Continental, American Airlines, and in 1995 I was used to see Gulfstream International airlines, which is a small airline that operates in Florida. It's a United Airlines partner. The main traffic is light aircraft, because Daytona is a place for flight training. There's an aeronautical university called Embry Riddle Aeronautical University that has a lot of airplanes. Usually they are a problems for us from Phoenix East, because they take some privileges during flight and ground operations. You can learn more about this if you want, it's very interesting, just click here !
