Our winner, on postdoctoral study in life science:
I am in the same boat as you, and I am beginning to take on water... I am on a NIH fellowship. A 1st year post-doc makes 19.5K, 2nd yr = 20.8K. If you come back for a 3rd year (i.e. you haven't been put out on the street for loan default or you haven't come down with beri-beri from eating cat food from a can - the seafood suprise is a wonderful treat on crackers) they will give you 25K... I have complained... Basically, I got one of those I- walked- 5- miles- to- and- from- school- in- the- snow- up- hill- both- ways speeches. I guess I shouldn't be so practical and should consider myself fortunate for having such a "prestigious" fellowship... My only release in life is the old 'tear in the beer' thing, but now I can't even afford that...not even the Stroh's 30 pack (a great bargain)...
Another thought that irritates me like sand in the KY is the future of scientific research. With the butt-load of PhDs that are on the market today and with the federal budget problem... (I should have voted for Pat Buchanan). I often wonder if it is even worth sticking the post-doc thing out so that I can go on jump through all the flaming hoops required to get a faculty position where I won't be able to get funding and I will struggle for 5 years only to be denied tenure... [I]f I scrap the post-doc thing... Do I leave the sphere of masochism known as the post-doctoral experience? Do I leave research all together and look for a teaching job? If so, what the *!$# have I just wasted the last 10 years of my life preparing for? ... I could have done that DNA- expert- at- the- OJ- trial thing. Perhaps I could be a Chippendale. Obviously I would have to change my name to Rocco, loose the beer-gut and trade in my cut-offs for a Speedo... I KNOW! I could be a haberdasher. Yeah, I could do that. "Hello sir, you look like a seven and three quarters, would you like brown or black..."

1) A studious Harvard man ate some "funny brownies" then changed his last name to what he believed was "Star Child" spelled backwards. He cites Saint Thomas Aquinas, Alan Alda, and his boss Louie DePalma as heroes, and when the condemned building he called home was torn down, he moved in with Louie and burned the place to the ground when he left a beanbag on the stove. From a wealthy family, he spent some inheritance on a racehorse for $10,000 dollars. He named it "Gary." In 1968 he was ejected from the Democratic Party for stealing decorations.
Character's name, including title ("Mr.," "Dr.," etc.) _________
