This is a very unofficial home page for my home town, Holyrood, Kansas. A semi-official home page does exist, but it is not complete. I'm hoping that this will prod someone in Holyrood to create a real home page. (For an example of a good home page for a Kansas town, see the Garden City home page.)
There is now (July '98) a Holyrood Travel and Tourism Page, part of the Kansas Rural Tourism page. Who'da thought?
A small bit of history: Holyrood was founded in 1886. Even though legend has it that the name was originally "Hollyrood", the town was probably named after Holyrood, Ontario, Canada, which was probably named after Holyrood, Newfoundland, Canada, which was probably named after Holyrood Palace, in Edinbourgh, Scotland, the seat of the Scottish Kings and the hangout of Bonnie Prince Charlie in the mid 1700's. As far as I know, these are the only locations named Holyrood (which means "Holy Cross") in the entire world, which makes the name rather unique.
Here's a map of Ellsworth County to put it in perspective, courtesy of the Tiger Map Service of the U.S. Census Bureau:
One more map. This one shows Ellsworth County in the 1880s. Note the town of "Cain", about four miles south of "Hollyrood". By the time my great-grandfather arrived in 1891, Cain was down to two houses.
