Balkan Bulgarian Airlines was established on June 29, 1947. It is the national air carrier of the Republic of Bulgaria. Balkan Airlines operates scheduled services to over 40 destinations in Europe, Asia, Africa and North America and scheduled domestic flights on the Sofia-Varna and Sofia-Bourgas routes. Balkan Airlines also performs inland and international charter passenger and cargo operations.
Bulgaria’s civil aviation was born on June 29, 1947. The fifty years since that day have seen the conquest of the world’s airspace. The Balkan Airlines’ aircraft are lending over the five continents.
The crisis of the aviation market in the recent years directly affected most of the airline companies, even the big ones. The total liberalisation of the European aviation market is a fact now, so it is one more trial for the airlines. Taking into account the above facts, Balkan Bulgarian Airlines has to fit its development policy in accordance with the limits of the Bulgarian transitional economy as well.
A lot of studies and analysis have been carried out for finding the best solutions for the National Air Carrier - Balkan Bulgarian Airlines. They are the base of the flexible trade and price policy of the air company, as well as for the cooperation contracts with other airlines, both aiming in providing better aviation product to the clients, better services.
A specific program has been developed and implemented for structural reorganisation and financial strengthening of Balkan Bulgarian Airlines in compliance with the harmonisation and market requirements in all aspects of the airline activities. Its main objectives are to attract much more clients for both scheduled and charter operations, to provide funding sources for modernisation of the aircraft park.
