Hi Students,

I am Professor Sornem and I will be your History of Magic teacher this term and hopefully more terms to come. I am no Professor Binns, so you don't have to worry about being bored to your dramatic death. Now in this semester we will start with the History of Hogwarts, then move into the origination of magic, then finally, the History of Quidditch… Yes I knew that would put a smile on your faces.

Hogwarts was founded thousands of years ago. Extra Credit to the student who can research the exact date it was founded. The school was founded by, quite possibly the best Witches and Wizards of their time. Their names were Godric Gryffindor, Salazar Slytherin, Rowena Ravenclaw, and Helga Hufflepuff. In case you didn't notice, their last names were used as the four houses in this school. Salazar Slytherin didn't get along with the other four all that well. He was a pure-blooded wizard who thought that Hogwarts should only allow pure-bloods to the school. A pure-blood is a witch or wizard that has only magical parents. In my opinion I think it's a bit stupid for everyone to be saying their better because of their blood. Anyways, the other three founders disagreed with Salazar on letting only Pure-bloods enroll into the school. He decided to leave the school. Legend has it that before leaving, he built a chamber known as the "Chamber of Secrets". Legend has it that the Chamber holds a beast known as the Basilisk. A Basilisk is a form of giant snake that petrifies you if you look into his eyes. You will learn more about the Chamber of Secrets later in the term.

I hope you were paying attention, because you have a homework assignment. Oh come on, it wasn't going to be that much of a surprise, was it??
