Diagonal Block Stitch Created by Susan Smith "This stitch is my favorite for varigated yarn - something about it, maybe all the twisting and turning really shows all the colors to their best advantage."
Worsted Weight yarn Size "G" or "H" hook |
Row 1: Chain 6, dc in the 4th, 5th, and 6th chain from the hook
(beginning block made).
Row 2: Chain 6, dc in the 4th, 5th, and 6th chain from the hook (block
made), twist begining block up, slip stitch around post of beginning
chain of previous block, chain 3, 3 double crochet in the same space
where slip stitch was made (around post of chain).
This row now has 2 blocks.
Row 3: Chain 6, dc in the 4th, 5th, and 6th chain from hook (block
made), twist worked section up, slip stitch around chain-3 post of
first block, chain 3, 3 double crochet in same space * slip stitch
around chain-3 post of next block, chain 3, 3 double crochet in same
space *.
Remaining Rows: Work as in row 3, repeating between stars (*) as many
times as needed across row. For a 7" sq you will need 9 - 10 rows
depending on the thickness of the yarn you are using.
You can also keep increasing till you get to a length of @ 60" or 5 ft
to make an afghan.
36" makes it a baby blanket or lapghan.
15" - 20" makes it a preemie afghan.
12" makes it a placemat.
9" makes it a dishcloth.
8" doubled makes it a potholder.
2 4" sqs makes a sachet, or make it with Needleloft plastic canvas yarn
and you have a kitchen scrubber.
When desired width is reached, begin working decrease rows.
Decrease Row: Work decrease rows as follows: Slip stitch in each of
first 3 double crochet and in first chain-3 space, chain 3, 3 double
crochet in same space, * slip stitch around chain-3 post of next block,
chain 3, 3 double crochet in same space * , repeat between stars (*)
across row, end with slip stitch around chain-3 post of last block.
Repeat Decrease Row until only one block remains. End off.
Other Options!
Change colors at the midway point and you have 2 triangles. Check out
some of the quilt patterns that use triangles and crochet yourself a
quilt :-)
Change colors every other row for stripes.
Use your scraps to make a scrap afghan.
