Frank B. Finite
A "True" Atheist
The Olympic Spirit
Is Offensive:
I am writing this special intermediate
article in the midst of and on the subject of the Olympic Games
currently being held in Utah, USA.
This spectacle is an afront to
all of us atheists and frankly offends my brain to no end. It
should offend your free-thinkin' brains too.
It's bad enough that they are
being held at the Mecca of the Mormons this year, but if one
does their homework they discover an Olympic history steeped
in religious ferver.
The Olympic festival was the
most important and ancient of all other Greek festivals. It was
the greater religious festival among others, dedicated
to Zeus, the supreme of all gods.
The sanctuary of Olympia
imposed its authority throughout the Greek world, whereas soon
the Olympic games became the symbol of Panhellenic unity.
The site and the sanctuary of
Olympia gradually developed through time. From a simple cult
place, it evolved to an elaborated sanctuary adorned with temples,
the greatest among them being the Temple of Zeus, secular
buildings and statues.
The Olympic festival was held
once every four years in the most hot days of the summer.
During the five days of the festivals,
a number of sacrifices were dedicated to the altars
of the gods of Olympia, the most magnificent of all being the
sacrifice of one hundred cattle in front of Zeus' altar.
Now don't get me wrong, I'm not
against sporting contests. These have evolved over the millenia
due to our genetic programming by nature for males to attract
potential mates.
I still haven't figured out why
females do it.
Also, all other ties with the
ancient festival to the gods should be severed completely. The
modern organisation of Olympic Games is also based on festivities.
These ceremonies symbolise the united spiritual community
of all the people from different societies.
And then there's that dominating
sponsor we see not only in the olympics, but in most all sporting
events - NIKE.
Nike was the goddess of
victory, who presided over all military and athletic contests.
Why must we be reminded of this religious nonsense on every shoe,
glove and jock strap we happen to see on most of the male and
female atheletes participating?!
BTW, all of this is just the
tip of the offensive iceberg. I'm currently doing extensive research
for the next issue of Blind Fools on just how saturated our society
is with religious reminders in everyday life.
If you've been a slacking atheist,
you'll not just be depressed about the whole offending situation
but hopefully you'll be motivated to get involved.
Just do it!
So I am petitioning you all to
boycot the Olympics to get the name changed (as well as offensive
sponsors dropped like a heavy ice-dancing partner). All this
spectacle does is shove religion down our collective throats.
At first I thought changing the
name to Animalympics would be appropriate enough, but my market
research of other free-thinkers indicates that the name is still
to similar to Olympics.
So I haven't come up with another
name yet. If you come up with a good one, e-mail me and I'll
post it on this article as a potential replacement.
