I am certified in teaching CPR, and teach classes at the place of my employment. It has been rewarding and sometimes very frustrating to teach the classes. It is my goal to have everyone around me certified in performing CPR and basic First Aid. |

THE BASICS |

you only want to give what the victim is lacking. If they are not breathing, give air. If they have a pulse, but still not breathing, only give air. Checking the victim often to make sure victim still has a pulse. If the victim then does not have a pulse, then give chest compressions. |

EMERGENCY BREATHING
Adult (8= years old) full head tilt by the boney part of the victims chin using your fingers, and the other hand on the victims forehead, tilting the head back. 1 breath every 5 seconds.
Child (1-8 years old) less of a head tilt than the adult using the same hand positions as above. If compressions are needed, keep you right hand on the victims forehead while giving compressions. 1 breath every 3 seconds.
Infant (Birth to 1 year) less of a head tilt than the Childs above. 1 breath every 3 seconds.
If no air goes in, retilt the head, and try again! You want to give just enough air in each case scenario to allow for the victims chest to rise and fall with each breath you give them. |

COMPRESSIONS
ADULT
Depth of compressions = 1 1/2 to 2 inches
1 rescuer CPR 15 compressions / 2 Breaths
2 rescuer CPR **15 compressions / 2 Breaths ** This has been recently changed, It was 5 compressions to 1 breath.
CHILD
Depth of compressions = 1 to 1 1/2 inch using one hand
5 compressions / 1 breath
INFANT
Depth of compressions = 1/2 to 1 inch using two fingers 5 compressions / 1 breath
For the adult, and child placement of your hands is CRUCIAL. You do NOT want to have your hands on the victims xyphoid Have your hand(s), three fingers above the xyphoid, in the middle of the vicitms sternum. Your hands should be between the victims breasts at this time, or close to it. On an infant, place your index finger just below the imaginary line between the breasts, then place the middle and ring finger on the victim. This is the correct location.
