A. E. Housman Poem - for 03/02/01:
"But Oh! Fast Fading Dreams!"

  End of Innocence
  Beginning of pain...
  As childhood ends...
  A world, cut in twain.

  I gaze about the world
So bright and new it seemed...
  As Truth becomes unfurled...
  And thus ends the dream.

  I see the world now
As the world sees me still
  I gaze down below
From the top of my hill

  I gaze about, weeping
At the maw of cruel war
  I see darkness creeping
  And problems in store

  I wonder now, why
  Had I not seen before?
  What smoke fills the sky
  From endless war

  Cruelty, perversion
  It seems quite insane...
  My Heart shows aversion
  To such dreadful pain

  In my youth I saw
  Such high Ideals of Life
By my Troth, I fain return
  From such long-winded strife

  To reach Ideals like these?
  It seemed simple before...
  But now upon my knees
  I fall, forevermore...

  But am I to despair?
Think back, on tales of Yore
I must not give up, so there!
There is Hope, that precious Ore...

  But Hope of what?
  And Hope to where?
  I must recall
  My Hopes before...

NOTE: THIS POEM IS RATHER DEPRESSING. WELL, DUH. OBVIOUSLY. IN FACT, IT WAS SO DEPRESSING THAT I WROTE ANOTHER POEM, "
Hope For The Future", TO LIGHTEN THE MOOD. WE NOW RETURN TO OUR REGULARLY SCHEDULED Poetry.
Back to the Sacred Grove...
