*UPDATES & RANTS*

December 06 / 08, 2003: Look at that description of temporality preceding this! I guess it must be update time then, huh?
Look at that over-worded first sentence! I guess it must be upda... anyway. Important stuff this time folks... in short, both major projects from Harmony II (which f.y.i. ended just this Thursday) sit before you tonight. Yea, this very night (if I finish before midnight, anyhow, which I certainly
hope to do (Editor's note: I didn't.)). Ahem. Anyway, before you listen to my raving masterpieces of brilliance (because when you're raving they seem like masterpieces of brilliance...? Actually, they'd probably just give you a headache), I want to briefly (and approximately) define a few relevant terms, so that you have some idea what you're listening to. I think these should be fairly accurate...

Tonal, adj.. Staying within major and minor keys. Usually uses triads (chords based on thirds), and chord progressions including triads (I-V-I, I-IV-V-I , I-ii-V-I, i-V-i, etc.). Most popular music is tonal. We covered tonal music in Harmony I. I think 'diatonic' means something similar, but I'm not exactly sure what.
Chromatic, adj., and Chromaticism, noun. Outside of the current key? Like accidentals (possibly excluding some variations on the minor scale, like the raised third in a VMaj chord) and whatnot. I think.
Atonal, adj.. Not 'confined' to major and minor keys. I think you can have some accidentals without really being atonal, especially if you're using chords from other keys as secondary dominatants.  I think strictly atonal music would have no keys.
Secondary Dominant, noun. Well, as you may know, a dominant is a V (five) chord. GMaj is the V chord in the key of C Major, right? And in the key of G Major, DMaj is the V chord. Well, if you were to use a Dmaj chord in the key of C Major (where the chord built on D is Dmin) in tonal music you would think of it as a 'V of V' chord (dominant of the dominant), temporarily going into the key of (in this case) G to add some interest to your harmony. And then you'd probably want to go to the V chord (GMaj), because a dominant (V) chord resolving to the tonic (I) chord just sounds nice. (The tonic chord is the chord built on the first note of the key, like CMaj in C Major, GMaj in G Major, AMin in A Minor, etc..) Note that GMaj is V in the key of C Major but I in the key of G Major.
12-Tone Serialism, noun. Heh, I recall I (tried to) explain this a while back on my weblog... basically, it's a particular theory of atonal music where you start out with a note row which uses all 12 notes in an order of your choosing, which you then (in theory) develop into a piece - kind of like you might develop a melody in tonal music, I guess? Much of Harmony II was devoted to 12-tone serialism... all four pieces of the following pieces are at least partially written according to 12-tone theory.
Okay! With my ego quite sufficiently soothed, here are
tonight's star update items:

Magic Square #1 - first attempt at my Harmony II midterm (a trio for flute, viola, and cello). I posted it because I liked some of the harmony I did in it, but I sped it up from what I had it at originally, because I think it might be a little too painful to listen to as it was. Also, note that most of the piece is inexplicably played by a church organ.

Magic Square #3 - pretty good I think, but veeery atonal. So I went on to write...

Magic Square #4 -  I used the magic square just for harmony on this one, and went on to do whatever melody I liked. Maybe a little less harsh-sounding than the others?

Bada** Chromatic Metal For Woodwind Quintet #1 - "Dawn Of The Lawn" - The beginning of a new genre, and my final project for Harmony II. Note how I develop my note row by not really having one, unless you want to count the four augmented chords that make up the beginning (which state all 12 tones)... but the rest of the piece isn't based on augmented chords, it's based on whatever the heck I felt like writing down... I mean, on the sound I was, er, going for. Yeah.

Less anticipated, but I hope still welcome, are these other musical pieces I wrote, including my timeless classic The Shazoo-oo Of Uu, which I wrote in Ireland several years ago via my time-tested strategy of "writing notes on a page and hoping they sound awesome". The beginning sounded good anyway...

From now on I'll rant from there not here, cleaning this column up for more of what we all like - updates! Oh wait, that's right.   01/04/03: Rumors abound that sometime soon I am going to update my web site. OhohoHO! How wrong they are!
Seriously, my web site needs a facelift and the interface needs improvement. But that's not what I brought you tonight. Oh no! Four pictures of amazing googliness. And of course the 'Ganjitsu' logo on the front page, but that's not so important. Hope you're all doing well, even if you DON'T come to my web

12/03/02: Okay, I'm back with another update. It's not much, but it does have an interesting story behind it. Oh
yes, and go to www.HomestarRunner.com sometime. I do! Enjoy!

I The Gi
ant Flaming God
It's December 2nd, 2002, and for a while I've been agonizing about how I'm possibly going to get all my studying done for the SAT II that I'm taking this next Saturday (December 7th). Unfortunately what I have NOT been doing is actually doing the review for the Latin test, which I plan on taking (along with the English and Literature ones...). Now, see, it's been a while since I studied Latin last, so what Mom and I decided I would do was review the entire book of Wheelock's so that I knew everything (besides, Mom wants me to continue my study of Latin, and to do this I have to actually KNOW some Latin). Now, this seemed like a fine enough plan waaaaay back a month or more ago when I could study one chapter a day and be done with time to spare, but quite frankly it's now December 2nd, 2002, A.D., and I'm on Chapter 12 (I've reached to 15 at time of writing). And the test is Saturday. And I've got 28 (now 25) chapters to read in 5 (now 4 ^.^) days. So, what's the solution? Why, I have to power up a
nd turn into a GIANT FLAMING GOD!!!!!!!, of course! Like they always do in Dragon Ball Z when the protagonists are confronted with a new totally amazing power of invincibility. Only I actually like the magical girl style more myself (sans the dress...... um... but some sort of clothes would be nice... masculine clothes please). Sadly, I don't really have the time to waste on drawing myself as a Giant Flaming God, but I did it anyway. Of course, I came out looking like an angel rather than someone from DBZ or a magical guy... and don't ask me why I don't have a shirt on! I don't have the time to write myself a totally awesome theme song, either... so look for one sometime soon!
  ***

Heh, anyway, on with the news. Thanksgiving at my cousins' in New Jersey was one big Walsh (et al., and Uncle Al, too) party. And since my cousin Amy took it upon herself to ghettocize me and teach me proper Instant Messaging etiquitte (in the 'Yo / Sup / Just chillin' (JC) / Not Much (N/M) / Good hangin' wit' ya / Peace mah main man' sorta category), I suppose I ought to say, a resounding WORD UP SISTA! Yo, yo in the haus, you're all in the haus, we're all in the haus. How's my vocab. today? Um. Anyway, Gloria et al. (but not Uncle Al necessarily) may be pleased to hear that the mystic application of Ben's Mad Skillz to my Talentz over AOL Instant Messenger last night seemed to have 'sort of' the desired effect of teaching me how to jam. Yay! Anyway, wish me luck in reading half of Latin I and all of Latin II in the next four days. I'm relatively certain that unless my Giant Flaming Gondess works REEEEEEAL good, I'm gonna need it.
^.^ Peace out!

10/29/02: Isn't it depressing how rarely I update anymore? Well, it depresses me anyway. How nice were the glory days when everyone maintained at least one website and visited each other's sites almost daily! The relatively great discussions of the Common Room! Everyone else's sites! It was great! But times, fads, and even people change, and if we do not accept this it can only make our pain that much more acute, right? Therefore, though it brings us pain, we must move on and deal with life. Not that suffering is bad, in itself. It can lead to growth, which is good and perhaps necessary. But you probably want an upda
te, don't you?

Prose:
The Great
Highway Metaphor
An interpretation of life as a big old highway. Nay, a GREAT highway. You probably will think it's a little strange, but I think it kinda sorta works. A clarification: I describe Heaven and Hell as rest stops, and I think the reason I did so was to say taht they were more or less temporary stable states that exist for us in life and maybe in death, too. Seem odd? Well, to me, Heaven and Hell are more of states of mind than physical places. Hell is a separation from ourself, and Heaven is unity with our divine
spark. Maybe?

Poems
:
Do Unto Others
A verbal attack on verbal attacks, as well as over-the-top so-called 'fundamentalism' in Christianity / Islam / et cetera, in which the fundamental theory seems to be 'we're right, you're wrong and moreover EVIL'. I really am sorry if you feel I was too vigorous in stating my case, but it's one of those things that kinda has to be said. I even mildly denounced people who don't denounce this kind of thing when they see it. On an interesting side note, I do in fact call myself a Fundamentalist... my fundamental being, basically, there's good, it's nicer when we all play nice, love everyone, try not to hurt others, and there can be many different understandings to the universe, all correct to one ext
ent or another.

Music:
In
sane With Madness (incomplete, faster than it should be played)
One of the rare ones that I composed without using the computer and  translated using Massiva Midi Editing. I wrote it at my Grandmother's apartment one night when I should have been writing a speech for my impersonation of Gautama Buddha on the morrow, or maybe reading some poetry (for Mrs. Cook's first Friday class of the year was the next day). This version is okay, but it's much cooler to hear it played as it was meant to be played, in real life, with an overdriven electric cello playing the bass line and a pianist playing the rest. Still not bad and potentially worth
a quick listen.
Unknown #2
2 (incomplete, I think)
One of those golden fragments I write using the computer that comes out sounding like a real-type song. Very short. I could do something with this in the future, make it longer or something.

Unfortunately, most of the major projects that I'm working on now are pretty big: Book II, Bunny Princess Koko Season I, Global Domination (computerized card game, as you may recall), my multi-path RPGMaker2000 RPG, Bob Spectrum (for lack of a better name), in which in theory you can be a monk, a magical girl, a giant robot pilot, an evil super-powered monk, or a fisherman but which is, like most of my works, still in its early stages. Too, there are so many things that I have left unfinished! My life could sure use a pause button so I could work on these things. Ah well. Still, hope is omnipresent. Some day I may well find a way to get my schoolwork, my writings, my games, my music, all this wonderful stuff that I love when I'm doing it all done while still keeping daily in touch with you people. Ah well. For now, it is time I retired to bed. Love ya! A temporary manifesto of my current philosophy (which does away with theology and loves everyone instead) may be coming soon. I've also got a nice creepy story that I wrote one night which I may release for your viewing pleasure, although it's kinda personal. We shall see. Love ya!   - Benjamin

P.S. It has been suggested that I give up Geocities and get a (we)blog instead. It's tempting, but I need somewhere to store my longer works, and anyway I've been here for so long that it would be more trouble than it would save me to change now. And a weblog wouldn't cure my laziness or my responsibilities. So, sorr
y. Not just yet.

08/15-16/02: Well, I'm safely and happily back from Ireland, and back even more recently from Chataqua Institution in New York. Which is not a mental institution, by the way. News: Cousin Rachel is back safely from the Amazon, Mom-Mom and Pop-Pop (grandparents on my father's side) seem to be doing better now (Mom-Mom just had an operation yesterday, but it well, apparently, which is good) I'm going through kerazy mood sw
ings, I found the best Samurai Pizza Cats web page in the universe, one which actually has the episodes for download, and my computers are blowing up right, left, and to both sides. Which is why we've been sent another computer from Hewlett-Packard, which hopefully won't die so easily. But the upshot of the matter is (put it right there, old pal, if you don't know what an 'upshot' is, either) that I wrote an EXCITING STORY CHRONICALLING MY ADVENTURES!!! Death of a Legend 1, or so it's called. In other news, there's that picture of KokoP (for 'Purple') and Musashi on the front page and in the Artwork directory, which I haven't updated in a really long time. Ireland Journal 2002 is (in theory) in the works with everything else, but needs not only to be finished but then to be reviewed afterwards.

Oh, and some fun LOGIC regarding Cloning Pets while you're here. A quote, to be more precise:

...“at the end of the day, it’s an exercise in hope,” concludes Gillespie. “If we give people hope and bring these animals back, I think it’s a pretty go
od thing.” - From THIS story from MSN.com

And HOW is that going to 'bring these animals back,', quote unquote? The unfortunately apparently fairly widespread belief that nonhumans don't have souls leads people to very strange materialistic conclusions. Yes, I realize that probably most people realize that a cloned pet or child won't BE that pet or child, but still, they seem to fancy their physical characteristics well enough without it. Hasn't ANYONE heard that beauty is more than skin deep anymore? Or more relevantly, does
anyone believe it with their actions? Anyway, it seems to me that if there's a meaning to 'us' lives, their might as well be a meaning to 'them' lives, too. So if we still matter after we die, seems like the rest of the world ought to, too, to some degree or another, too.
   Okay, I'll st
op ranting now... goodnighty!

06/20/02: Okay, I'm finally updating. YESSSSSSS!! I've got soo much stuff that's *almost* done... that just needs the finishing touches or whatever... but right now, sitting here before you, here are
some things which are done, at least for the present, and ready for your hungry viewing pleasure.

Now, at least, if this is all I get done before I go to Ireland this Friday (yeesh! Scary, huh?), you'll have some stuff to enjoy while I'm gone. Oh, and here's
a very special new Works-In-Progress Directory where I'm keeping some of  my works-in-progress while I'm away, so that you can view them if you like. Don't steal them, though, 'cause that would be not nice. Most of them are in Microsoft Word format, but a few might be in other formats. Sayonara! Slanche ('cheers' in Gaelic)!

03/31/02: Ah, how quickly time falls by the wayside when one is occupied! As the current front page blabber proclaims, I have been sick for the past few days (though hoping to be better soon), and I hadn't been home a HUGE amount before that, either. In any case, sorry... but on the positive side, here's m

  02/18/02:
NO TIME TO EXPLAIN! The Hunting of the Snark... goodnight, and happy Valentine's Day!

02/16/02: Yes, I know I'm a horrible slacker. But I don't feel up to uploading anything tonight, so you'll just have to wait until I get my spirit and energy back up. Sorry... and did you know that 'Allah' just means 'God', with a capital G? Inter
esting... I've also heard (note the itallics) that a 'jihad' is simply a struggle, usually against oneself. So now everybody's going on a jihad, then? America vs. people who hate it, Muslims vs. charismatic preachers making the Koran serve their own ends... do you know what the Koran is about? I don't, well enough to speak about it with any credibility - but like the Bible, I think its primary function is to dictate how to live one's life. That's what I have heard, anyway... I haven't read it, mind you, either in the English or in the Arabic... I'm rambling... I don't hate bin Laden, I pity him and feel sorry for what he's chosen to do with his apparently great talents... definitely rambling... arghhhhh...
Well, I've had it with thinking for tonigh
t. I'm going to bed!

02/06/02: Sorry I took so long in getting these up, but here the
y are. For starters, five more new poems (with four more waiting in the background):

Strength
  To Thee
  A H

  The Noble Knight

  Warfare's Un

    And now, five
new pieces of writing. Hope they may prove enjoyable / useful to someone out there!

And there you have it. Lots of stuff that I've been meaning to get
uploaded for ages - ages. Enjoy!

01/24/02: An update... FINALLY. Yes, I'm very sorry it's taken me this long to get stuff up... but
look, now you've got five new poems to read. And here they are:

Once
  The Historian
  The Ghost That
Haunts Me All My Days
Lord Of The Fries (the poem, not the short story... which
is Coming Soon)     Life, Most Like A River

See, I'm not ALL bad... but
the all-too painful lack of a Poetry index might be. I will see to it when I find the time... no, seriously. Ciao for tonight!

01/02/01: Well, how was *I* to know? It looked innocent enough..
. well, at any rate, A River Runs Through it was a great book (in my opinion), I mourn the canceled party (though not the chance to go fishing... I'm too happy to hurt poor innocent fish, you understand, even if it is a noble sport fit for champions and philosophers...). Oh yeah... the update? Can't you read? It says Updates AND Rants! Rant! Rant! Rant-tastic! *COUGHS* Well, anyway, Happy New Year, and yes, A Look At The Meaning Of Christmas now has a spot on the Writings Index Page. Gezuntight!

  "..."

(And no, I don't know how to spell 'gezuntight', even though I'm pa
rt-German. Oh well...)

  12/26/01
: Merry Christmastime, everyone! Yes, and all the others, too... Hanukah, Kwanzaa, and whatever else anyone might celebrate this time of year. A new entranceway art on me front page, of course, as well as a new paper... one dealing with the meaning of Christmas and, especially, the nature and purpose of Jesus in the world. 'A Look at the Meaning of Christmas', it's so called, though Jesus really is one of its main focuses. So, why DID God send Jesus down at Christmastime? It's no Lord of the Fries (for those of you in the know, I WILL get to it soon, I promise!), but it's a decent paper. A bit wordy, perhaps, but if you read it carefully, it might be understandable, and I think I've made wsome important points within. So I hope you won't be wasting your time... Good luck, everyone, in this and everything else, and have a very happy everything, everyone, everywhere! *WHOO* What a happy rush...

12/04/01: Already? Yes, I'm back already. With another paper... and it's a sarcastic treatise on education that I wrote a good
while ago, entitled 'Educating My Foot.' Sound like fun? Well, that's not all! That's right, folks, but the Writings index page is finally up again! New and improved... be sure to check out everything! From Socratic to Barryesque... we've got it all, and it's finally readable! Sorry about the .txt files... let me know if they mess up on your computer, too! One could always do a Ctrl A (the 'select everything' command), then copy the text into Microsoft Word or something... I'll see to this eventually. Ciao for tonight!

12/03/01: Another update, eh? Who would've guessed? Well, darn it, it's too late for me to work on all the new, improved index pages tonight, so I'll just upload the latest and get out of here. So here's a little philosophical t
reatise... entitled 'The Divine Nature of Everything.' Enjoy!

11/28/01: Well, I'm back with anothe
r update. A bit of a reorganization of the front page, which now has a Sections of Interest heading. This heading will list my featured works, such as the new... Bunny Princess Koko serial, the first episode of which is now out! It's not available via the Manga page yet... but for now, access it here or through the front page. Vale!

11/21/01: Finally my scanner is working again, so I've got a few new things up...
namely, no less than five new pieces of artwork! I'll try to get this site looking better some time soon, but for now, you know where they are. Just for quick reference and your convenience: #1, #2, #3, #4, and  #5.
Have a very happy Thanksgiving season (and beyon
d), don't be too evil, et semper vale et salve!

11/06/01: Darn... looking at the heading for this section, I just realized that th
ere's  been a lot more Ranting than Updating going on here lately. Hmm... maybe if I'd spend less time ranting and more time doing stuff, there would be stuff to update! Even the fabled 'deliverables'!
I've finally got those two pesky papers into their sentinent (or at least slightly suspicious) su
bdirectories. That one Writing, and one Poem. Happy? Oh, and there's a new song that I'm still 'working' on. It's not up yet, but I'll get it up once it's done. All it needs now is a bit more melody and a drop of specialness here and there... ciao, et vale!

10/31/01: Not much, but something is better than n
othing, right? One new Paper (that has not yet been uploaded to the Writings directory, so you'll have to access it here... for now), a paper that I wrote a little while ago... this, THIS is the fruit of my labor. Oh, and there's a Poem, which I may not have got the link right before. I'll try to get all this stuff sorted out some time in the near future. Sheesh... the Internet's been giving me more trouble than it's smurf, or however that saying goes... I'm nearly too tired to think, so please don't hate me 'cause I use the word smurf. Goodnight...

10/25/01: Many new works that should be uploaded. A gazillion pictures to be scanned in and colorized. And all I can
show for it is one new Poem? Sheesh. Well, at least it's a good one, anyway.
Well, in other news, the site remains in SUPER ULTRA DRASTIC need of a better look. At least one person out there has obsered how incredibly UGLAY the file directories look, which means that it's time for me to go back to the older look of actual pages to list the files. It'll be *slightly* more work on my part, but it'll go a long way towards improving the look of the Purple
Shrine. Any comments? E-mail me.
And just out of curiosity, what do you people think of the last two poems? Has anyone come up with any thoughts on either of them? Has anyone BEEN here for six months? Sheesh. I need a bigger fan base... I wonder if they
sell those at WalMart?

10/18/01: Two new poems in the Poetry section, of varying levels of seriousness. One is quite deep, the other is - shall we say - slightly less deep. See if you can figure out which is which... *COUGHS* Other than that, I apologize for not updating more lately... I'm afraid I've been rather busy. I will try to get some of the various papers that I've been writing in my spare time uploaded (once I deem them fit for the public eye, which may take a while)... valete!

08/31/01: Nothing particularly special today... just some maintenence w
ork. Hopefully the new Updates logo on the main page (which brings you here) & the newly shuffled rotation on this page doesn't make the site look too 'widescreen'... please let me know if it detracts from your ease-of-view! Anyway, hope your back-to-school schedule isn't too crazy... as we say in Latin, bonam fortuna! ('Good luck'!)

08/29/01: Two in one day? How'd THAT happen??? Oh well, I guess you'll all just have to endure. Be stron
g! *COUGHS* Anyway, the Music directory is now working (you'll have to download the files yourself, but they're small enough it won't really matter). And yes, the Philosophy page is back up. Sorry for the general languidity, though I highly recommend that you read Laurens Van Der Post's A Story Like the Wind. My Latin class has started, too...

08/29/01: I need to make this mon
do quick. I got the two songs uploaded, though they do not have suitable names. Listen to them for yourself, and tell me what they should be about! In other news, no Music link in the main tree & the Philosophy page seems to be down for the present (but check it yourself). Something went wrong at World Crossing, I guess... I just hope they get it fixed soon! Better run... I'll say more later...

08/25/01: Hmm, 'tis been a while since I did any updates here. Partly due to the fact that my computer's been going bonkers lately... but even more so because I just haven't. Well, none of my ongoing projects are up and running yet... though it looks l
ike next up could be my 2001 Ireland Journal... but for now, enjoy the Philosophy Page (AND THAT'S AN ORDER!!!... please?). Oh, and there's a new directory, Music, where you can find... MUSIC. Made with wholesome Massiva MIDI Editing goodness! I've got at least two completed songs (sans lyrics, mind you)... but I'll upload them sometime tommorrow, as well as adding the links to the directory... if all goes as planned. MWA HA HA HA HA!!!

08/04/01: Well, I didn't QUITE meet the dea
dline, but oh well. The Common Room Philosophy Page is at long last reincarnated, this time on World Crossing. Great service! Anyway, it's got a new, PINKER look to it, stuff's easier to view, and we can use portraits (just to name a few). Cool! Other than that, I've got a paper on education in the works, which should be out sometime soon. It will, of course, go in the Writings section when it is completed... remember, use "Last Modified" to sort by date - ! Remember to be environmentally friendly... it doesn't take much, if we all work together, to save the world...

   08/02
/01: All right, another big update. No less than FIVE new poems, including my epitaph to Christopher Columbus, a strange little number involving grapefruits of the sparkling magic variety, the relatively final version of my history project for last year, a strangely violent parody of Robert Frost's 'The Road Not Taken', and, last but not least, a nifty little poem by the name of 'Remember the Future'. A tall order, but okay.
Not being content to settle for that alone, I have also uploaded no less than nine
of my various ensundry miscellaneous writings to the Writings directory where they belong. These include my paper on scientists, my paper noting the nature of memory and remembrance, five reviews of various sorts, and two papers on the environment. *WHEW* And before I forget, you might find it useful to sort the entries in the subdirectories by date by clicking on the 'Last modified' heading inside the subdirectory. This makes it easier to tell which ones are new and which ones are old, since they're normally sorted by name and I don't always give the name here. Hmm... other than that, not much to report. There's one new artwork in the Artwork directory... a rough picture of a Nyubian sorceress (from Book II) done entirely with my computer... and that's about all! The Common Room shall be returning soon, despite vast quantities of CRAZINESS taking place on my computer today. I plan to have the GRAND OPENING sometime within the next week, though it will be available for access before then... maybe by as early as tomorrow afternoon, in fact. Ciao for tonight!

07/25/01: Finally, an update at last! Well, I'm changing the look of the site a tad bit, as you can see. I've decided that it will be simpler, and thus easier for me to update more often, if I make better use of sub-directories, and less use of actual pages except for a few special cases (I figure that the Literature and Manga pages can be updated when neccessary, as their stuff takes quite a while to do, and they require slightly more information anyway). If anyone has any questions, please feel free to ask. Updates will continue to be listed here. If you think I'm a total wacko for doing all this, or think that it's the best thing since sliced bread, please let me know!
Oh, and before I forget, I also uplo
aded three new pieces of BPK artwork (in the Artwork directory, of course), as well as a number of far-out pics in the secret directory. See if you can find it! (And no, Geocities is NOT lying, there really isn't anything in the Writing directory yet. And the Philosophy page is still nonexistant. But fear not: since I'm just back from Ireland (as of last Friday), my Ireland journal will be arriving soon (I've delegated my Mom to review it for errors and such... so it should be done in a couple of days), and the Philosophy Archives (thank you, Joe!) will appear sometime soon. Also, I have a new idea for the Links page that will get rid of some of the crowdiness... and, just as soon as I can reach the Coolboard site, I'll check around for alternate boards.)
The future is lookin' good, p
eoples. Seize the day!
