(O)Shaughnessy;
Variant Spellings; Shanessy, Shaughness, Shaughnessy, Shaughness, Shaughnesy, Shaunessy, Shocknessy, Shaughnesey, Shoughnessy.
The main sept of the O'Shaughnessys was from the county Galway in the region of the Kiltartan barony. A branch of this sept settled in Co. Limerick in the sixteenth century. The O'Shaughnessys are a very ancient Gaelic sept, claiming descent from Daithi, the last pagan King of Ireland.
In Irish the name is O Seachnassaigh meaning 'descendant of Seachnassach'. The name is possibly derived from seachnach 'elusive'.
The Chief of the Name accepted a knighthood from Henry VIII and set a pattern of accepting English titles while being firmly Irish. The last Chief of the Name, William O'Shaughnessy (1674-1744) was a colonel in Clare's regiment and became a Marshall of France after fifty years military service.
Sir John O'Shaughnessy (1818-1883) was an Australian statesman and Sir William Brooke O'Shaughnessy (1809-1889) was a surgeon who was also a pioneer in telegraphy.
