(O)Ryan;

Variant Spellings; O’Mulrian, O'Mulryan, Rouane, Royan, Ruan, Ruane.

There were two distinct septs of the Ryans; one is in Co. Carlow and the other in Co. Tipperary. Ryan is one of the ten most common names in the country and of the two septs that of Tipperary is the most numerous.

While in English the surname Ryan is common to both septs, the Carlow sept in Irish is O Riain, i.e. descended from Rian, while the Tipperary sept is translated as O Maoilriain meaning descended from the follower of Rian.

Nowadays Ryan without the O prefix is the common form of this surname: O’Mulryan is obsolete.

Edmund O’Ryan (1680-1724 ap.), know as Eammon a ‘chnuic (Ned of the Hill) was a Gaelic poet: Luke Ryan (1750-1789 ap.) was an officer in the Irish Brigade in France; two Abbes called O’Ryan were executed during the French Revolution.

In the United States Father Abraham Joseph Ryan (1838-1886) was a Confederate poet in the Civil War; Patrick John Ryan was Archbishop of Philadelphia, while Stephen Vincent Ryan (1826-1896) was Bishop of Buffalo. Thomas Fortune Ryan (1851-1928) went from rags to riches becoming a millionaire.
