(O)Riordan;

Variant Spellings; Reardan, Rearden, Reardon, Reirdon, Reordan, Reordon, Rierdan, Rierdon, Riordan, Riorden, Riordon. O'Riordan, O'Riordane.

The O'Riordans moved from Tipperary to Co. Cork before 1300 AD, where they became followers of the 'Lords of Muskerry'. Nowadays the O prefix is largely being resumed, as the numbers of the sept with and without the prefix are approximately the same.

In Irish the name is O Rioghbhardain and is translated to mean 'Descended from the Royal Bard'.

Sean P. O'Riordan (1905-1957) was the archeologist who excavated at Tara. Sean O'Riordan (d.1960), the poet has been called the last of the Gaelic poets. Delores Riordan is a popular present day singer.

A branch of the O'Riordans settled at Nantes in 1753 and became peers of France.

In the US, Patrick Riordan was Archbishop of San Francisco and Richard Riordan is currently (1999) mayor of Los Angeles.

The motto of the O'Riordan coat of arms is 'Pro Deo et Patria' which is traslated as 'For God and Country'.
