Maurice de Prendergast came to Ireland with the Norman invasion and brought the name with him. The descendents of Maurice de Prendergast are to be found in Waterford and South Mayo.
Some of the Prendergasts assumed the name Fitzmaurice in honor of their ancestor, they were also called MacMaris. Nowadays the name Prendergast is widely corrupted to Pender. In Irish the name is translated as de Priondragas.
John Patrick Prendergast (1808-1893) was a historian and wrote The Cromwellian Settlement of Ireland among other works. After the defeat of James II some turncoats of this name were granted vast tracts of the O’Shaughnessy land in Co. Galway.
