Originally the MacKennas came from Co. Meath where they were a branch of the southern Ui Neill. However, today the name is found in Monaghan, Down, Clare and Kerry. Their main territory being in Truagh Co. Monaghan.
In Irish the name is Mac Cionnaoith.
Andrew MacKenna (1833-1872) was a prominent writer in Belfast and Stephen MacKenna (1837-1883) was a novelist.
General John MacKenna (1771-1814) joined Bernardo O'Higgins, 'The Liberator' in Chile and became important in the history of that country. Fr. Charles MacKenna was the chaplain to the Irish Brigade at Fontenoy in 1745.
Today Siobhan MacKenna is an internationally famed actress.
