The name originated as a branch of the midland O'Neills and spread to the Sligo area around 1300 AD; there they continued to have a large territory.

In Irish the name is O hUigin or descended from Uiginn and is said to be derived from uige in Old Norse meaning 'sea rover'.

The O'Higgins are noted for producing prominent poets, one of these Pilib Bocht O hUigin wrote the first poem printed in the Irish language.

The O'Higginses were also of importance in the history of Spain. Don Ambrosio O'Higgins (1721-1801), Marquis de Osorno was Viceroy of Peru and his son Don Bernardo O'Higgins (1780-1846) is known as 'The Liberator of Chile'.

William Higgins (1763-1825) was a noted chemist and the family produced cabinet ministers for the Irish government including Kevin O'Higgins (1892-1927), who was assassinated.
